..... whether the electrical output is resistive or voltage. I have been asked by the company supplying an alternative sender unit.

Resistive I'd have thought?

12 volts goes to the sender via the gauge and then through a variable resistor, bit like your old Scalextric controller, 12 volts or less goes to earth.



Show them this, not from an S but same principle smile

Well it's the resistance of the winding in the unit which controls the voltage output. 12v goes in but the position of the "wiper" along the winding increases or decreases the resistance and therefore the output in volts.

Empty....



Full....



In the pictures the meter is showing the resistance so when the tank is empty the resistance is greatest and so very little voltage is getting to the gauge and so it doesn't register.

Does that make sense or just confuse the issue?

I need to order a new sender. The two to choose from are these;

I am assuming that the resistance one is the one to go for.

If you're planning to use it with the standard gauge then...probably. So how are you fitting that to the tank?
