My understanding is that if the laser detector goes off you will have already been zapped. However, most of the GPS based ones alert you to the camera van sites, with varying success.

I was under the impression that the Police have to publish exact locations of their vans 4 hours prior to use?

Do any of the "live" updates poll for this information and send it to in-car units?

Can we have a sweep up for those who have come in halfway through the thread...

1. Are we saying that NO device will alert a drive to ALL methods of speed detection?

2. Which device, overall, is winning so far as far as being able to offer the most wide ranging and reliable detection is concerned?

3. How many of you have actually been let down by your device and/or zapped a few times? And which device was it? If we can all steer clear from the devices that just don't work that would help us all I think.

And finally...I think it;s fair to say that a device that updates automatically is a must. Unless they all do that nowadays?

Coyoty garbage so out of date with information it's not worth thinking about.

Stopex - my conclusion is that nothing really works that well. I have sent several back inc a Road Angel+ and found a Lynx no better than 'comprehensive' but clearly outdated untrustworthy databases on a TomTom.

I keep looking at Snooper 3 zero as it has live updates and radar and laser sensing. Few have anything good to say about it though. Lets face it - its really about vans and one offs? Talex?

It would be nice to get a run down from the guys that sell these units.
My brother has a snooper which I will be using next week, to see if it is any good. He has just returned a road angel gem gem for repair under warranty

Talex - i don't think I have heard of this...? I am right in saying, though aren't I...that the Snooper and the Road Angel are the best bets overall? And for the most part do the job? Are people being pernickety when they criticise?

I don't really know if they are being too critical mate but I do know that I sent My Road Angel+ back. An absolute nonsense of false distractions.

I feel like trying the Snooper 3 Zero and paying RRP for it from Halfords - you cant beat their money back policy. Snooper Direct service is reputedly awful (and their return terms probably illegal from what I read on their site re distance selling regs). Its another reason to really mistrust and lose respect for them...and just try finding these terms on the site.

Ooohh...from Snooper direct you can choose iOS or Android (both at far higher cost).

http://shop.snooperdirect.com/product2110186catno3...

Seems to do fixed ones too. Is my phone speaker loud enough - does it ping when I am on a call? Can my phione latch onto TWO Blkuetooth at once - hands free and this?

Arghhh!

Bugger that - my battery is hugely low half the time (although I understand it probably charges by being used as device, but still, it takes five minutes to charge up...) and I don't want my phone on a call not doing its job spotting the coppers! Why does everything have to come through the phone nowadays?! Gimmick/technology for technology's sake and doesn't achieve ANYTHING! Must be independent and on the dash as far as I'm concerned...

Just tried a Snooper Elite and it's worse than my road angel classic, on the motorway it picked up all the gantry cameras BOTH ways.

The main problem I have with the Gem is that it only warns you of mobile camera sites with a 500m range.
The ranges, and some other data, can be fully personalised. You can set alerts from 250m (B roads) to 1000m (dual carriageway). I'm not on commission, honest, it's just worked very well for me!

Is that a software update? I couldn't seem to do that on mine.

The problem still stands though - the lasers the police use have a range of 2000m+ on a straight road you could have been lasered before the Gem tells you anything.

There was a big software update 2/3 months ago.... Graphics changed a lot too.

You're right about the rozzers tho... Whatever we use, it's just an aid to good observation and anticipation. If they get serious about working at night, none of us will keep a licence methinks!

Thanks, I'll try to borrow a Windows laptop and update it.

I thought the over the air updates were only for camera locations etc and firmware needed a PC.

Bump...

so from reading this and a few other threads, they all have downsides and no particular device is that highly regarded?

I've never (touch wood) had a speeding ticket but with the recent growth in average speed camera method of profiteering from death, and that my vans tax class makes it more prone to such tax gouging than the cars around me I'd like something that knows, tracks, informs, and allows me to concentrate on the road and not on the dash as I've found myself doing recently. I know it's "safer" to stare at the dash readout and not concentrate on the road, but I'm quite obtuse, which device would I be best looking at?
