Parisienne Walkways will have to wait. How do I tell what I need, or best to take the broken one into the muso store?

Buy a full set of strings, only a couple of quid. I'd imagine it will be a set of 9 guauge You'll need. Or if You dont feel confident, just tell the shop staff what guitar you have and they should be able to advise

If it's an electric, probably 9s. might be a lot heavier if it's an acoustic. I just put 11s on everything. smile

How long have you had the strings on the guitar? The recommendation is to change every six weeks if you play regularly IIRC. It's a good idea to get used to changing strings in any case.

Electric. Bought the guitar in Jan, and have started learning, so the strings are original. Off to stock up on some spares later.

the gauge is the thousands of an inch diameter of the top E. 8 to 12 is the normal range for electrics. Fatter ones are harder work to play but give more sustain and a fuller sound, thinner ones are easier to bend, but also to break. Most people I know use 9 or 10

What's the best way for an amateur n00b numpty to tune an electric guitar after fitting new strings?

Is "with a tuner" not the answer you were hoping for?

It's probably the start of the answer. I daresay in these technological times, there are all manner of gizmos representing various levels of quality and price and user simplicity though. smile

Depends on the guitar & what sound you're trying to achieve & your style of playing.
I used to play a Les Paul & used Ernie Ball skinny top heavy bottom (10-52's) but they'd be a bit daft on something like a Strat or Tele where you want something like regular or super slinky's or 9-42.

Scale length on a LP is a bit shorter, which means lower tension on any given string gauge. that probably explains it.

It's a good idea to cost the bridge saddles and the nut groove with graphite from a pencil - it lubricates it a little and stops the strings from snagging.

Or you can buy pre-tuned strings, so you don't need to bother with a tuner wink
