I am using a Cooper S this week whilst the owner is abroad and i really must say that it's a terrific little car with one missed trick. Not enough bhp. With hot hatches putting out 300, 350 and even 400 bhp why on earth is the most powerful Mini furnished with a mere 189 bhp? That's 4 pot derv output.
Yes the limited run JCW will have a tad more but the Cooper S title car deserves more than that from fully 2 litres, surely?
Roomy, agile, good looking to many and top quality. Sensibly priced too. My mate got this for £17,000 barely run in. But my 2006 Cooper GP had 218 bhp, weighed 1090 kgs and 9 years has seen little progress in my book. Yes the GP was a ltd edition but the Cooper S was up at 170, over 10 years ago.
Mini must be losing sales because of this and other than the superb torque from virtually tickover it really does feel ordinary on performance. Indeed i was left for dead by a BMW 123D last night. Not great.

They are not about outright power though are they. My r56 cooper s feels just right power wise. More is always welcome, but it hardly leaves you wanting.

The JCW isn't a limited run and will have 231bhp.

231 might feel a lot better.

You are comparing different markets. If it had a lot more power it wouldn't be £17k. Hot hatches with 300bhp+ are around £30k. Cooper S is competing with the Fiesta ST, Renaultsport Clio, Peugeot 208 GTi etc. All around £18k. Not everyone can afford to run 300bhp cars.

300bhp Mini will just wheel spin and burn its tyres out.

FWD cars often struggle when more than 200bhp is put through them without magical electronic trickery

£400 tuning box will get it up to ~230bhp with a good torque increase, that should make a noticeable difference for the price..

I'll be getting one, but I don't feel that my F56 isn't quick enough as it is, for me it feels just about right. Some more torque when planting the throttle wouldn't go a miss, though.

Agree with what has been said though, the 'hot' hatches nowadays are the Focus ST, Golf R, S3, new Type R etc.. All pushing 300-400bhp. Cars like the Cooper S, Fiesta ST, ClioSport need only 200-250bhp at the most, in my opinion.

I do think they should've rounded the 'S up to a nice 200as standard though, as 189 is quite a low figure for a 2.0 turbo from the new BMW engine range, but from what I can gather, the turbo is seriously understressed in these cars.

The standard boost pressure is as low (if not lower) than the stock pressure in my old Toyota Glanza 1.3 Turbo.

Performance Torque near Kidderminster remap an F30 320i (same engine I think) to 290 BHP.

The 328i to ~330 BHP.

I'll drop them a line and see what they offer. Most people are saying these ECU's are corrective so traditional remaps are tricky, the plug'n'play boxes seem to work a lot better

From what I've read that seems to be true.

PT have only recently released their Fxx remap of the 2.0T BMW ECUs.

I've got a BMW 328i which still has 15 months of manufacturers warranty, so maybe something in the future.

Well apparently a benefit of the 'box' is that it can be unplugged in seconds and you wouldn't know it was there, so effectively warranty-safe

I would just be concerned that it would leave some sort of trace that BMW would spot!

If you truly got 'left for dead' then either the 123d was re-mapped (which, to be fair, is likely these days as most seem to have been), or you weren't trying hard enough!! On paper, both the Cooper S and 123d are very similar, though no doubt the immense torque of the 123d helps pull away from a Cooper S who isn't quite prepared.
