OK, so Classic cars have increased in price....Art has increased in price....

How about buying an old English gun as an investment? Has anyone done it? Good idea or bad idea?

Something like this.... http://hollandandholland.com/all-guns/holland-holl...

I imagine the problem is that you'd buy from a dealer (ie top price) then have to sell at trade, which will knacker any gain.

How about one of these?

That's a fairly standard H&H model (albeit with a gorgeous stock). I.e. If it hasn't appreciated much since 1923 (with today's record low rates) I don't know why it would increase much going forwards.

You are also paying a significant premium for the peace of mind buying from H&h. Check out the catalogue for next months Gardiner auction at Sotheby's (and prior sold prices). Buying at auction, you need to know what you are doing (eg look at the price to get H&H to restock or re barrel a gun!).

If you want a gun to take game shooting however, that is gorgeous. Expect significantly higher running costs compared to a newer gun though.

Beware of an impending bank on lead shot, to be replaced by steel. Old English guns won't be proofed for steel.
