4x4 for the beach

Morning gents, I am looking for a 4x4 to use purely for getting on the beach to remote fishing areas, so will be over some soft and firm sand and pebbles. I don't want to spend more than £2000, thanks for any suggestions

I guess something that isn't known to rust easy, and the correct tyre choice would be high on your shopping list ?
WJ Grand Cherokee's have no known rust problems I've ever read about, even at 15 years old. Plenty to choose from and bargain basement prices. I'm a 2.7 crd guy, but the others here swear by their petrol lumps !!
Just look for plenty if service history.

Are you using public rights of way or do you have an easement to permit access to these areas?

Tidal sands are very easy places to get stuck and subsequently lose your vehicle...

I've a Volvo XC70, which can do all the above. Paid 1k for it too. With 2k you could get one without a dent in the rear 1/4 panel.

It's public rights of way mate and i know things can change but the area in question has firm sand all along its length and iknow how the tide comes in these areas 👍

XJ Cherokee. Facelift ones are galvanised and are much less prone to rust (early ones go in the foot well).

They're nice and light with a decent bit of poke. I understand they're well liked by people that bounce over dunes. You'd get about three of them on your budget.

Cherokees are a good shout but old mistubishis & toyotas would be great too either in SUV or pick up form. A pick up may even suit you better for lugging lots of dirty/wet equipment around as it can be hosed out. A mate of mine does a lot of scuba diving & bought an old Mitsubishi l200 pick up with a hard top for exactly this reason. I also owned one myself years back for work & it was very good off road plus you can get so much stuff in the back of one.

Gents, am looking at all the suggestions you have given me, my lads boss has a discovery 4 ltr W reg with 73000 on the clock, FSH and has been really well looked after, thoughts on this?

Also very close to me a suzuki grand vitara 2.0 TD has just come on sale?

4.0 litre engine can be prone to slipped cylinder liners, which are terminal to the motor.

Corrosion can also be a factor with Discovery's

As a cheap workhorse/hack they are a good bet if you plan to run it into the ground.

Right guys, have just took ownership of a suzuki grand vitara,in great nick, just had it down the beach last night and apart from one really soft patch of sand which bogged it down till put it in low gear it flew out, its got normal tyres fitted right now, but want to change them out for AT tyres with an emphasis on sandy ground being majority of where it will be used, any recommendations for tyres?

For beach driving I'd go for bfgoodritch 'mud terrain'.
The difference is like night and day in comparison with road tyres.
Expensive but you'll only ever need 1 set!

For use on sand you want a tyre which floats rather than digs so any mills all terrain will do. Round shoulders and mills tread are good on sand; aggressive tread will dig down to more sand and get you stuck.
