Last time I had a skip someone came and emptied it removed all the scrap and put everything back in. This time I saved them the hassle. I have piled all the scrap neatly in front of the skip at the end of my drive. 24 hours later it's still there. It's all going in the skip later today and I bet so one comes an empties it out can't win.

They probably think it's a trap, they have to ask permission now and aren't allowed to just take it.

Bit off topic but is a pile of car batteries and bike batteries worth anything? And a frame's worth of alooominum?

Yes, yes and yes

Don't know current prices but large car batteries were about £5 each

Ali is circa £770 a tonne at the moment

Batteries are done by weight also

Large car battery is worth about £5

Remember to take photo I.D and proof of address (utility bill) payment is cheque or bank transfer now

Son took a load of scrap office lights (30 of them) to the recycling place in Huntingdon Friday. They wouldn't take them. Said he had to have at least 100Kg and the rate for scrap steel is 4p Kg. So not point recycling, so he took it to the dump.

Do you have any fluorescent light bulbs? (tube type). They're great as a one use only light sabre

Are you on any local 'buying and selling' type groups on the dreaded Facebook?

These sort of pages often have a couple of scrap collectors on them and people often just put up a post saying "washing machine and car battery outside xxx address if anyone wants it" and it's usually gone within the day.

I've found it quite handy!

Since the new laws were introduced collecting scrap as a 'job' is nowhere near as appealing.

There are still plenty around unless you live in the sticks (I spend my time between central Birmingham and rural Shropshire)

Usually I just leave it in a nice pile outside my gaff (I do live on a main road)

Every Single time they have been as dodgy as you like but always pleasant and a laugh, they have always knocked on the door to ask as well

Gumtree always has people asking as well

also the stuff with no cash payments from the scrap dealers got to be cheque or BACS ... rather harder to fiddle HMRC/ DWP ... as well as tracking sources

Not sure about that. I took in 700kgs of scrap lead recently. Still not too bad a price.

Hopefully the thefts are down as well then.

given you have to show ID and can only recieve payment in cheque or by BACS now when you go to a scrap dealer and most of them are very aware of the metal theft issue ( because they don;t want want the triple threat of local Police, BTP, HMRC and the DWP crawling all over them )
