They didn't come with "proper" Recaros, only the recaro designed standard sport seats.

VW did stick the 16v in the Colour Concept, in Europe if memory serves me correctly.

I pick this 16v Anniversary up in a few weeks, been off the road for a few years a but it's a very very special car, with some lovely OEM+ touches and a completely one off Recaro interior

I recognise that car, owned by a longstanding member of ClubGTI and previously had a personalised number plate B12... in which case yes that is a rather exceptional mk3 and not really representative of the typical mk3 GTIs that are left!

So turns out it is an 8v but it has the BBS Solitude alloys. 1998 R with 112k miles, and just the one owner from brand new. Fresh MOT also.

£500 - what do we think?
Its worth more than that in parts. As long as its not riddled with rot, do it.
Hmm maybe, not sure yet. I really thought it was a 16v so the 8v is a little disappointing as its slower than my boring Mk6 TDI! However I've got a soft touch for 1-owner well looked after cars, and I still remember getting lifts in this one as a child when it was new!

Having now done a bit of research it turns out these run out 1998 Mk3 GTI are South African built. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing!

Mk3 16v GTI Anniversary will be, only 150 brought to the uk and the numbers are dwindling.
Good point, that fits my "good spec" as they did come with jazzy Recaro interior, red seat belts & calipers and come in mystic blue which is a stunning colour.

If only VW had stuck a VR6 or at least a 16v into the colour concepts as they all got decent spec but only a 8v.
They didn't come with "proper" Recaros, only the recaro designed standard sport seats.
Why are these not 'proper'?

They are, but they are GTI Edition Recaros, a model only available in Europe, but it's not an Anniversary

Yes this is correct, a long standing CGTI member and good friend of mine.

I've lusted after this car since I first seen it in 2003.

It will likely have air con, no sunroof and different interior cloth to the European built Mk3 GTIs.

VW Europe turned to VW SA to fulfil UK orders for the last MK3 GTIs as Wolfsburg had started building the mk4

The 8v will never be a classic IMO, but a nice well kept mk3 Golf can only go up in value from £500 as they are getting rarer by the day.

I had a SA spec VR6 that I sold to make way for the anniversary I pictured, it was quite an unusual car, the rust protection didn't appear to be as good as Wolfsburg built cars, which even then wasn't terribly great.

Good luck, I love a mk3 Golf and I've owned one, in one form or another since 2003

With the amount of 16vs that have been raped for their ABFs I'd say a nice 16v will be considered a future classic.

I used to really dislike the mk3s but now have a better appreciation for them.

Aaaaah, apologies. I misread your post. I thought you were referring to the MK3 in general.

No problem DR G, of my mk3 ownership, most have had the recaros as the sports seats are in a word, ste.

I actually fitted a set of those GTI Edition Recaros into my last 8v Anniversay, that Was also converted to a VR6. The stock interior was absolutely ruined and the 8v Gearbox was holding onto life by a thread. It turned out a rather nice car by all accounts

It's a good one alright. I've traded notes with your mate about 16v tuning on Cgti as if has some good mods, all sorts to try an hit close to 200hp n/a

I believe it is also pretty sorted in the suspension an handling department to.

Enjoy:-D

Unfortunately it's not coming with the fancy ABF head or the VWMS 6 speed box, it's having a stock ABF refitted with a standard gearbox, as quite simply I can't justify the cost.

I will enjoy it for what it is.

I just got a VR6 as a project car and it's awesome.
Replacing my Subaru WRX Wagon.

First job is to sort all the bodywork and brakes and then get the beast an MOT, then I am looking for fit a MK4 Dash into it.
Then maybe decide to Turbo or Supercharge.

Mk4 Dash, good luck it's a rather involved job to get it fitted and working correctly, not worth the effort IMO

I looked at doing it when I had a mk3.5 Front on my old mk3 some years ago, I was going to do the rear and interior, but bought an R32 instead
