So a little background. I own a D3100 that I bought second hand to learn about photography. It was a great deal as I didn't want to spend hundreds and then find I didn't have the interest after a month or two. Now 2 years on Id like to upgrade, I shoot pretty much 100% with a AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6G.

With an upcoming trip I'd like to invest in a new camera body but just not sure what I could get for the money. Any advice? I shoot mainly landscapes and day to day portrait shots. Very rarely do I shoot fast action shots. I'd also like to get into more astro photography in the future.

IIRC that lens will be a DX - assuming you're going to stay DX, D7000 or D7100 secondhand or if you're going FX a D700 or D600 secondhand.

Any of these would be a worthwhile step forward in sensor and other technology..... And you keep your current favourite lens, plus the sky's the limit on the choices of w/a to add for landscapes....

(I'd go to Grays of Westminster for peace of mind and a minimum of 12 month warranty...)

What is it that the D3100 doesn't do well enough that makes you want to upgrade?

With £500 to spend I'd buy this:

If the change burns a hole in your pocket then consider a flashgun, decent bag, or maybe a fast prime lens as well:

I wanted to upgrade as its simple starting to show its age. Plus one or 2 of the buttons have become a bit temperamental. It was well used by the previous owner which is why I got such a good deal on it.

I did have a fast prime before, a 35mm F1.8 but I like to frame my shots with the zoom rather then moving the camera. Lazy I know but its how I like to shoot.

Will the DX lens limit a full frame camera photos? I know that may be a stupid question but wasn't sure if you need full frame lenses?

How much are you looking for one the recently serviced D7000?

DX lenses will only produce an image on part of the sensor so you'll have to crop the image afterwards. Using FX lenses on DX cameras isn't too smart really because you're throwing away a lot of resolution and using a bigger/heavier/more expensive lens that you need to. Some (all?) FX cameras do offer a "DX Crop" mode which just uses the bit of the sensor covered by the image. It doesn't gain you anything other than saving the effort of cropping afterwards.

Conversely, FX lenses on DX cameras can make a lot of sense. When I'm on a paid job I chuck an 18-35mm f/3.5/4.5 FX lens on my D700 and a 80-200 f/2.8 on my D7000.
