I've recently experienced the disappointment of a failed oil pump - at around 143k miles - which in turn took out my turbo, £1800 repair bill later I thought hopefully the last of any major expenses for a while, the flywheel already having failed and been replaced!!

Fast forward 24k miles later and the oil pump has failed again. I used an independent garage to replace the pump - VW master technician so I do trust him but.... - and turbo and the car has been going great until this latest repeat failure.

Initial thought from the garage was no way a new pump should fail so quickly so there must be something else going on in the bottom of the engine causing the pump to fail. I'm not a techie so I've no idea, hence post here to be better armed information wise hopefully when the garage get back to me properly. They were mentioning things like the console - means nothing to me frown - might need replacing which is apparently very expensive surprise surprise but would have to get into engine to see whats really going on. Again all expense that I'm thinking is no longer worth it given £1800 of repairs didn't last 30k miles and the cars probably only worth £2500 to £4k.

Would the techies amongst the posters here have any ideas as to what would cause a new oil pump to fail again so quickly? Is it too much to hope that it could just have been a bad new part? Also if I work on the assumption that as the independent garage fits genuine parts that the oil pump would be warranted, even if the garage were right and something else was causing the oil pump to fail could I possibly get away with simply replacing the pump again - and hoping the turbo's not gone again - and hopefully leaving it at that to get it back into a saleable state? Reason I'm asking is I haven't mentioned the warranted part scenario to the garage but the way they instantly went into it has to be something else mode I'm anticipating push back on any suggestion they just replace the pump. Also I don't want to piss them off - good mechanics are hard to find - if what they are telling me makes sense, my problem obviously is I don't know enough about the subject to know, hence the post!

Any and all info would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks, yeah know all about the balancer problem from first time pump failed but I'm sure at time new pump was fitted I was advised that new pumps had a modified shaft? I'm assuming that's why garage thinks there must be an other problem elsewhere in the engine.

The engine actually sounds OK though the info on the brake servo was interesting, I hadn't come across that before. On the way to the garage the first roundabout I came to when braking the brake pedal was hard like the servo was gone but then rest of the journey it was ok so hopefully OK?

Thanks

Can you clarify whether this is the PD engine or CR? As they are very different smile

Have to excuse my total ignorance I'm afraid but how do I tell? Nothing on the V5 to indicate which and nowt in owners manual I can easily see. If it's on engine block or anything like that unfortunately I can't check as car at garage
