One of the many things wrong with our E46 is the oil level sensor.
Are the eBay pattern ones any good? Or is it going to die within a few hundred miles causing me to have to drop the oil again?

It's also due a service - I think it's the Insp 2. However, it's on 137k and 14 years old, and I'm poor, so DIY seems like a good plan.

So, from looking around it seems like it's:
- Check everything hasn't fallen apart
- Brake Fluid
- Coolant
- Oil+Filter
- Sparks

What else is worth looking at? Most bushes and drop links are done (including front lower arms) and the autobox fluid has been changed.

Should I probably do all the cooling gumph? Header tank (eBay pattern any good?) and rad/pump?

I think what you are doing as a service is fine, the only thing I would do if you are feeling charitable is throw a fuel and air filter in there too, depending on when they were last done of course.
As for changing lumps as preventative measure (coolant system stuff for example), it's very easy to get carried away on these cars if you prescribed to everything you read on the net. If the cooling system is working I would be inclined to go with it and fix as it breaks...the proviso being that if something does fail then take all precautions to ensure the engine doesnt get excessively hot, this may seem obvious but I often hear of people seeing the car in the red and 'limping it home for five miles' etc.

ETA cant help with the Ebay sensors but would be keen to know as ironically my 325Ti has just started randomly flasing (oil level is fine wink )

See here for the recommended works list:

The only thing missing from your list OP is Air and Cabin / Micro filter. I'd swop the tires front to back and get the aircon regassed too.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Do what you said & if you find any issues sort them.

Don't do stuff for the sake of it.

The sensor failed on my E46,light stayed on.
Bought an Ebay one,the light goes out but doesn't come back on when the level gets low
