If its for summer weekend runouts, then a 996 has got to be in with a shout.

a 996 is leagues, LEAGUES ahead of any Golf for driver enjoyment.

A 996 Cab will provide all the wind in your hair four seat sportscaring you could really want. Summer evening + flat six + top down = very good times.

DO NOT get a 996 cabriolet, awful things fit only for users of hair straighteners

Get a 996, they're great - It is what I did.

So much better than some crummy Golf!

Haha, the Porsche 996 always seems to divide opinion from what I can see ! ?? a v8 cerbera would be high on the list too but 12k doesn't seem to buy much fibreglass, shame as Im also a massive fan of TVR's. I must admit I do enjoy the sense of occasion when you roll out a car you don't use everyday so this may go against the golf from what people say.
I think a test drive in both is in order. The monaros a good call, considered the Holden variant many moons ago.
Decisions, decisions......??

No other option. It's a Porsche.

It's wonderful.

Get one. ASAP.

Considered anything from the AMG stable?

12k will get you something as close to a 4 seat TVR as you can get.

Superb cars but lots of sheds about. Gems when found are sort after and hold, even increase in value. Be wary about IMS on 911 motors most warranty companies wont touch these claims now and a 6 grand engine rebuild would ruin ownership experience of a 12k 'fun car'

Good luck in your search.

What about Audi V8 cabriolet. 4 seats and summer fun.

This. I had £13k to spend on one, bought one for just over £10.5. Spent some money on getting it the way I wanted and I love it. Seriously. It's exactly what I wanted it to be, can fit the family in, can pootle to work in it, can floor it and laugh like a drain each and every time. smile

If you want lightweight and can get away 2 seats - I'd go for a VX220, Elise or TVR

If you want 4 seats and a decent noise, you should take a look at a Monaro or a M5

10-12k is a great budget, but personally I'd stear clear of a 911 unless the badge appeals

I've also considered a R32 many times but for me it just doesn't quite do it... too good as a daily but not good enough as a weekend toy. Everyone will tell you to buy one for the noise, but if you want noise you need a V8 or something like a TVR staight 6 smokin

Have fun shopping!
Don't listen to this. He hasn't owned one. I do. The noise is simply stunning.

Monaro will do what you want. Still love mine after 9 years but finding one may prove difficult, only 900 ever imported. Some have been written off, others broken for spares whilst the rest are loved by their (mostly) one owners from new.

Same weight as an R32, twice as fast and the correct number of cylinders.

I'm not going to say the R32 is a fast as a monaro Wormus, because on paper it isn't. It is however pretty rapid when equipped with the DSG gearbox, and I'm fairly sure would leave the monaro standing off the mark. And on damp roads, which is all the time in the UK. And it sounds awesome. I mean really awesome. And it won't throw you into a hedge. Underrated cars in my opinion, but then like most of pistonheads I am biased :-)

Agreed a golf just isn't in the same league especially the under powered, over weight r32.

I had a mkv golf r32for 3 years from new - great all-rounder but it's not a "fun" car - very civilised, comfortable, sounds very nice too of course. It wasn't the sort of car I would take for a blast, just because I wanted to.

I sold mine for about £12k, bought a sensible 4x4 for practical stuff and spent £4k on a Subaru p1 to use as a "toy". Still 4 seats, 4wd obviously and so much more entertaining in every way than the golf. Much more exciting handling (grip, balance, adjustability), much faster. Image won't suit everyone but if image is more important than the drive you could always go buy a TT.

If I was looking for a practical 4 seater at £12k I'd go for an Sti, Evo 7/8 or maybe an e46 m3 (not really my thing but most ph'ers seem to love em).

The Skyline is comparable with a Porsche.

A Golf isn't. The R32 isn't even the best Golf.

Will the kid fit in the back of a 3.2 TT DSG? You'd get Coupe looks with Golf underpinnings, V6 and Haldex Quattro. I'm not sure that would be fun though.

Do R26.Rs have rear seats?:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JiAglkspc8

Are they available for under £10K?

Do you want fun or an upmarket superhatch with a prestige badge?

The Golf R32 invites comparison with some pretty exotic cars on account of that V6, but was only ever given the remit to compete with other hot hatches (which it was very good at) rather than 911s, Monaros and the like!

The Skyline is on my radar and will increase in value, however, like the 944's they are very old and can hide a multitude of nasties, the Skyline is prone to rust, has twin turbos and 4wd and is apparently heroically thirsty.

Didnt realise 944 S2's had got anywhere near 12 grand, I dont think they have really, I sold my cab for £4500 18 months ago, I think 12 is good turbo money, if you do go for one, get it checked over properly, rusty sills are not the end of the world some would have you believe but try and get one that isnt festering.

I would go newer unless you are handy with the spanners and dont mind a bit of fettling.

I agree it is a bit of a pudding but underpowered? How much power do you really need in the real world? DSG drops from 6th to 2nd in 0.6 sec on kickdown and I have not once found the car underpowered. They are very easy to drive very fast.

Off the line in the wet you are probably right but the in gear thump in the back you get from the Monaro's V8, especially when supercharged is something else. As for sound, try this:

I too am biased smile
