Has anyone got any tips for going to egypt ?

Do I need to be aware of anything before I go ?

In light of current, ongoing, problems in Egypt, I would recommend checking the UK FCO website to see what they are saying.

Where are you looking to go? I visited Sharm in Easter last year for a week and again in summer 2013 for 2 weeks and everything was fine.

I have loads of ideas as I have travelled quite a bit over there and so has the OH (lived there for 2 years during revolution)...

What are you looking for?

lie back do nothing?
Decent diving?
Cruise?
etc, etc.

You will get the sh@ts, no avoiding it.

Stick to tourist areas and all will be fine. The sea at Sharm is stunning. El Gouna is much nicer but the sea nowhere as good. Hurghada bit in the middle, wandering round the town is more 'real' there.

After a few days you will look on McDonalds as the worlds most wonderful food. They deliver. You will want to know this.

Bin many times now and will be heading back in a few weeks.

Avoid the Russians and otherwise just enjoy the circus.

It's Hurghada that I'm going to.

Anything worth doing or seeing while I'm there ?

I've already got my anti squits tablets :-)

Do you need to take any insect repellant etc ?

Anything with as much DEET as possible, I always get chewed to bits.

Diving round there Im not sure about, I was at Marsa Shagra about 150-200km south and at the Eco diving resort.

Not sure in this climate I can recommend a Bedouin night under the stars or not, its good fun, but I don't know how safe anymore.

Best advice I can give you is to leave your tablets behind and buy theirs when you get there.
Start taking them the second you feel ill and you should be ok. I don't think it matters what you eat/avoid eating either.

I've always thought the best advice was to wash your hands a lot after handling notes.
The money (paper) is in circulation a lot longer than over here and gets absolutely filthy.

Tbf we took the hand wash stuff with us last time and used it constantly. Still got ill, bad stomach cramps, etc. booking for August this year so it's not put me off, I'll just take their tablets straight away this time.

I would say that Dahab is an excellent visit... only time I go to Egyptian Ibiza is because the plane lands there and straight into a taxi for the 60km trip to Dahab for diving.

Pretty quiet but unspoilt really. No Ruskys at the two hotels we went to. Diving and snorkelling is excellent.
Possibly a bit windier though.

I had a holiday booked 2 year ago when it was pretty bad apparently, the company (Thomsons) offered me to cancel the holiday but everything I read online was that "Sharm" was safe etc so we went and you would never of guessed there was any issues in the country, the only difference was it was pretty quiet which make for an amazing holiday, only downside was that we never got to see the pyramids or museum in Cairo.

We were there during election time aswell.
1 year on we booked to go again to stay at the same hotel in Sharm, this time we got to go to Cairo for a day and see the pyramids, museum.

There was a huge military presence outside the museum, tanks the whole lot, was actually pretty cool - Again I the news made out the country had gone to st but we had NO bother, we were out and about at all hours of the night with zero issues.

There was a fair few Russians but they were all good crack and mostly keep themselves to themselves.

Will be going back to Egypt this year when i come back from Honeymoon.
