I made my own by-pass pipes..sounded like a boat at idle but lovely at full chat, felt like it spooled up quicker too (X50 430 car). I think its very tricky to get a 993tt to sound 'just right'. Lots of people over on Rennlist experimenting with systems to try and get a balance, worth a look.

The gutted boxes are pretty much the "sports" back boxes that lots of people have sold for years (your approach just as good and much cheaper). They definitely give the car a different sound (by moving from an absorption and resonator stage to a simple expansion chamber), but still do a reasonable amount of silencing. Although it is only a minor difference, I don't believe that they are any less restrictive than stock either (most likely they are actually slightly worse).

The next stage is to make up some silencer bypasses as mentioned above.
The turbos themselves actually do quite a lot of silencing (and you can't get away from those), as do the cats (which you can change).
First stage with the cats is to swap to (expensive) 100 cell centre sections. I did this and it increases the noise noticeably. Next is to do away with them completely.
If you are running both cat and silencer bypasses you may as well run short pipes straight out of the turbos like the gt2 race cars.
The alternative if you want a different type of sound is to fit an x pipe as some have done (as otherwise the sound is effectively of two 3's) or weld a section joining the two cats or cat bypasses as they cross in the centre/rear of the car.
Hope this helps
Steve
