Just booked a week in a National Trust cottage in June.

Got JO's Fifteen booked but looking to compile a short list of less formal pubs and eateries. We will have our 2.5 year old with us so stuffy fine dining is not really on the cards. If anyone has any good shouts for pubs or informal restaurants that do decent grub and are child friendly I'd be much obliged!

Dave recommends the Waterfront in Polzeath.

I agree.

Please keep your proclivities to yourself - this is a thread about restaurants...

Not near to Padstow but go to St Ives for the day and go to the Porthminster Beach café. It's superb.

They do salt & spice squid with citrus miso dipping sauce which is just amazing. The fish & chips are fantastic as well. Also child friendly.

In Padstow Pescadou is pretty good.

Rojanos in The Square is also pretty good.

I was a bit 'meh' about 15. The setting is spectacular but the food was similar to Jamies Italian and nothing to write home about.

No6 is nice but is rather fine dining. Rick Stein's pub ain't bad just outside Padstein the lamb curry is very nice if it is still on the menu, few years since I last went.

Get the boat across to Rock and there is a few more nice pubs overlooking the harbour.

i live locally, so here goes:

No.6 is excellent but stick to the set menu, Pescadou is good as Dave mentioned above as is Rick Steins bistro, go across to Rock but rather than head to Nathan Outlaw go to The Dining Room, for me this is the finest food in Cornwall.

If you can head about 5 miles up,the road go to The Scarlet at Mawgan Porth, its simply breathtaking and the food exquisite, but go for lunch as its great value, evening meals are expensive. Enjoy!

Thanks flasher and others who replied.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but these sound very much like fine dining establishments, which is great, but I'd love a locals knowledge on pubs and lunch stops that we can incorporate in days out without having to prebook and be concerned our 2.5 YO will ruin it for the other diners.

There's a really good restaurant in Padstow called burgers & fish.

The head chef, Redas, previously worked at Nathan Outlaws restaurant in Rock. Excellent food, friendly and informal. They have a kids menu too.

The Old Ship Hotel does good pub grub with local seafood and well kept beer. Has a nice outside seating area as well.

The Cornish arms in StMeryn is Stein's pub, it's very good but you can't book so turn up early.

The Quarrymans just outside Wadebridge is excellent but might be worth booking as it can get busy. Brilliant steaks and Andrew Ridgley (of Wham! fame) is often propping up the bar if you like a bit of celeb spotting.

Paul Ainsworth now also owns Rojanos in the square, less formal than No.6 but good food.

That's interesting! Spent many drunken evenings in there over the last 25 years. I suspect it'll now be a little pricier, shame.

Prices at Rojanos weren't bad although I wasn't that impressed with our pasta dishes. No6 however is a real treat. Rick's pub does a great Sunday lunch, and try his chippy as well. Battered scallops are good.

Another vote for The Cornish Arms (Steins pub).

This spot is pretty good; http://www.raffertyscafewinebar.co.uk - in St Merryn

We had a lovely meal at the Beach Hut cafe which is directly below JO's restaurant at Watergate bay.

It seems to get mixed reviews but we also had a fantastic lunch at the Seafood restaurant.
