It seems unless everyone agrees the Golf is the most amazing car ever, they shouldn't contribute to this thread. I don't dislike the Golf at all, it's a nice little car and the drive of every (rented) starter home should have one.

you'll also have to leave PH, though, as we all run BP or GE or Coca-Cola
You mean some PHers actually work? I'd have thought a menial chief exec day job would be delegated to the nearest bh.

you have a mortgage on your house, you couldn't pay for it outright. Does that mean you can't afford your house?

Why is it that every Golf R thread disintegrates into ad-hominem mud-slinging and obscure references to either physical build or company directorships? I certainly don't understand the significance of the latter - does one need to have been on PH since it was a TVR forum back in 2003 to get it?

It's a good car for what it is but the constant discussion about it is boring and tedious

I think the problem is that if you are an enthusiastic Golf owner you will defend your car to the ends of the earth with no objectivity and reasoning allowed. I've owned Golfs all my life and it is this aspect of them that annoys me most.

I won't point you towards a thread currently running on VWROC about a supposed meeting between an R and a BMW 330d. It will annoy you even more.

Likewise:

I think the problem is that if you are an enthusiastic Golf R hater you will attack someone else's car to the ends of the earth with no objectivity or no/little experience of said car.

Now, hopefully between us we can get it going again for the weekend beer

I wouldn't be surprised if the R dispatched the 330d in a straight line. And yes, it's the sheer defensiveness of Golf owners that hacks me off. On the other hand, I've never met an ahole with a 147GTA. They know it handles and torque-steers like a pig, the build quality ain't up to much, they're lucky if they see 25mpg, but they don't care, it's got THAT engine and it looks great - and that's all they care about!

I doubt there would be much it in. But I would rather be driving the 330d, at a push.

I'm finding my golf R perfect for driving to and from the train station in the morning. My only worry is how I'll keep up with the repayments.

I would like to point out that there is no such thing as a "train station". It's called a railway station.
