DIY wheel painting
Discussion
Like all paint work, prepping is key to a good finish obviously.
I have a set of Compos I had off a guy that were a bit tatty (left in a garden for 10 years, literally.) There were little chips and engraved parts that were noticable in the paint (couldn't come out once sanded down normally). A layer of etching primer did the trick, especially sanding after one layer and then onto primering once it was all flush (I also sanded down the first layer or primer, then gradually built it all up before applying the paint). Although saying that, it was my first go at painting wheels so I am no expert to say what I was doing was the proper thing to do, but they did turn out pretty good for what I did do from just guides and generally applying my own knowledge!
Be sure to laquer them loads. I didn't with mine and they faded badly over a 6 months, could just be down to quality of paint/laquer (or lack of it) or just not keeping on top of cleaning them when I should have, heat from brakes, salt etc. But nothing hurts to get 3-4 layers of laquer and paint on them to get a good quality finish.
