35.3 achieved in Wittering and Heathrow. July record is 36.5
Saying 36C which means somewhere between 35.5-36.4 at the moment (not sure if they adjust after).Heathrow has dropped from a peak at 2.50pm though.

Biggin Hill peak was nearer to 5pm. So we are both right and deserve more than one really big cold beers.

When it gets hot like this you get plumes of hot air from urban areas and continental air swilling around and the ground acting like a storage heater releasing all that energy later in the day etc. combined, you get a late peak (or even a double peak).
There's a 10C difference within a few miles now as the really hot air is getting pushed out.
Just watched a stunning storm in the North West. Live in Macclesfield and the sky was uber dark over to the West. Called my parents who live 20 miles way due west to ask if they were having the intense lightning and thunder and they were along with buckets of rain. Awesome to watch and I've never heard constant thunder like that before. Sky darkened a little here about 5 minutes towards the end, but we were right on the edge of clear skies and the storm. But the wind picked up immensely and was quite eerie, but alas just a couple of stray lightning bolts and no rain.
In case anyone believes that our weather is unprecedented and anything to do with global warming, checkout Jul and August 1911 Met office summaries.
Just as hot and far more 'extreme'.
The Met seems to have a selective memory. Not so easy to sort out all the archived printed material though!

I was traveling west (from Surrey to Cornwall) yesterday and, from the BBC weather reporting/'news', you'd have thought we'd about reached nuclear armageddon or the zombie apocalypse.
I'm not sure whether it's charmingly British, or frustratingly parochial, that the moment we get either a cm of snow, or a few degrees of heat, and the country seems to grind to a 'let's-all-talk-about-it' halt.
The stiff upper lip rather limps when the weather changes. All in all, not very becoming.*
