the rear offside brake is binding slightly - recently passed its MOT, but was an advisory.
How much would a local garage charge to strip /clean /lube the brake caliper?

For a car where parts and access are easy not much, for a car where parts are expensive and difficult to access they would charge more.

Worst case...rear caliper circa £100, maybe couple of hours labour tops as long as no other problems

New pads £15-20

If you want them to try and take the caliper apart to free it up, obviously more labour intensive. Often no real point when a new caliper gives peace of mind it will last another few years.

Could also be a handbrake cable in need of replacement, that is what mine was.
