2004 S40 6CD Changer problem

Hi Everyone,
My FIL has an S40, 54 plate, and the CD player (changer) in the floating dash section is not working. I can hear some whirring going on in there but still no joy.
I'm a total novice when it comes to Volvo though and can't see how it is all put together and how easy it would be to swap the unit out? Are they available anywhere other than the main dealer? It's all integrated with the rest of the media centre and sat nav so I'd like to have some info before trying to help him.
