I've been to a Red Dwarf convention, despite never really having seen it much. It was mainly full of weirdos, but the cast were ace. True story. biggrin

First few series were great, went off the boil in later series.

There's an American pilot on youtube in fuzzy VHS vision, it's a complete disaster.

Love it. The first 5 were brilliant. When they went back to the ship it went off. Still good watching, mind.

Even when it went off the boil, there were still flashes of the old brilliance and so was worth a look.

I was a huge fan, and can still remember watching the first series as it aired.

I think the earlier series were labelled as 'Steptoe and Son in Space' and I can see where people are coming from with this but the claustrophobic and generally hopeless situation that they are in makes for some great comedy.

Norman Lovett is just great and makes a great foil for the others, as he performs his off-beat standup.

The early 'version' of the Cat was more interesting, as his behaviour is more cat like but they could not keep this gag going forever. Take for example his very first scene where he is spinning about/making James Brown type noises.

I think Kryten got funnier as series went on, in particular his needling of Rimmer and he needed to take on the Holly role as well. When Hillie came in I thought she made more than a decent job of it.

But they just ran out of storylines in the end. In documentaries etc it seems the cast genuinely get on and have a laugh together which helps.

I used to watch them when I was younger and really liked them. Watched a few the other night on Dave too (luckily it was 'Back to Reality' which I think is a brilliant episode!) HAs aged a bit, and SWMBO didn't know who Craig Charles was by looking at Lister until I said he was in corrie...

Still prefer S1 and 2 though with Norman rather than Hattie.

I've just watched all 10 series again recently. Series 4-6ish were the best IMHO. Early Kryten looks wierd! Norman was good though.

My favourite part is Kryten in the tank in Jane Austin World! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhuIsG6rDgk

There's some absolute classic dialog in the "Legion" episode featuring Stephen Fry. Some episodes were better than others but it still stands out as one of the better longer running sit coms for me.

I remember it being very popular when I was at one school, most people in the class would watch it, but I moved to another school and it wasn't as popular so maybe it had a 'cult' following back then? Or I moved schools when the series went downhill (1996).

One of the writers left after series 6 (the first one on Starbug), if you read their individual books you can tell that the decent one left! Saying that, I thought the latest series on Dave was good, went back to the simple sets of series 2/3 rather than the OTT CGI that we had in the later series.

I went to watch them filming on series 8 (1999), they used to film a fair few bits at our work so managed to get tickets through someone for Pinewood studios.

It was the one where they put a bird through a dna regression machine and end up with a dinosaur terrorising the ship. Very funny and my then girlfriend reckoned she could year me laugh on the audio track when we saw it on TV.

It was very well done, it was a double episode ("Pete" I think) and they filmed it all in order, with video clips of bits done on location, and then all the on ship stuff done in the studio, while they recorded our laughter for the sound track.

Both Chris Barrie and Craig Charles did a bit of stand up / chatting to the crowd while the crew were sorting things out between shots.

If anyone remembers the episode the captain had a fairly long speech about the thing causing havoc on the ship and eating all the ice cream, and he fluffed it so many times that he got a massive round of applause when he finally got it right. I looked like the cast really enjoyed filming it.

I love Red Dwarf, next to Blackadder it's my favourite British comedy.

I can't really say which one is my favourite series - 1 and 2 are completely different to the rest due to the different set up.

I remember not liking Series 7 or 8 when they were first aired, but on rewatching they have their charms. I prefer 8 to 7, simply because they're in a similar situation to series 1 and 2 (although bringing the whole crew back was a bit of an error I think.)

Series 7 has some great episodes and some duffers, and I even found myself getting a bit teary-eyed at the second episode (where Rimmer leaves to become Ace Rimmer)

Series 10 has its moments also, and wasn't as bad as I feared it would be - but Back to Earth is an abomination and I can't stand it.
