The record is gone now; hopefully he will just pick up his golden boot then forget about the whole record-breaking thing. If you are correct about his priorities, then Man utd have a big issue. We (England) seem to play a ridiculous amount of international friendlies in which he can stretch that record, and spend a ridiculously short time in competitions, where he won't stretch that record.

Nope, he's just physically done.

He'll never get back to the sort of form he used to be capable of being he's physically incapable of it.

And we're stuck with him.

Could be it...

Van Persie was/is physically done as well, to play at the highest level in Europe at least.

I think his legs have gone, to be honest. He's very old for his age.

When you watch that documentary Keyser mentioned it gives a good look at the player he was as a youngster. He was utterly fearless and frequently unplayable. He a long way from that player now.

Is he done?
He's got a hell of a lot of mileage for someone on the cusp of 30. But how many times did Giggs get grief for dips in form over the twenty years he played. He got dogs abuse from time to time at Old Trafford and if you look back the reality was he was adapting his game as he aged. Perhaps a bit of patience is necessary whilst Rooney does the same?

I know Rooney's a different player and will be done mid 30's but that documentary confirmed for me the sacrifices he's made for the good of the teams he's played in. He was perfect foil for Ronaldo when we destroyed all infront of us and perhaps the weight of expectation now he's supposed to be the main man has blunted that carefree attitude.

By all accounts he's respected at United and has huge influence on the current squad. Perhaps if the current crop of youngsters step up he'll settle into a deeper, creative role, we'll get another few years out of him and he'll set records that will be hard to beat. Can't forget that. He's only got Bobby Charlton to surpass and that records been there for 40 years.

I was intrigued to see if England would be transformed into a rampant, pacy side in his absence tonight. That fking hasn't happened!! Hence this rambling post!!

Rooney for the scrap heap? Not yet and in Martial he might have a decent partner to ease the pressure.

I agree.
We expect players to be loyal to our club but fans should so some loyalty to players that have done and cans still do a great job for the club.
I was talking to Bryan Robson a couple of years ago when he answered someones question about why Rooney is rated so highly.
Robson explained that Rooney often plays in positions that he doesnt like but without complaint. That when he plays wide he is a good as Nani etc, when he plays midfield hes a very good midfielder. Some players can play anywhere on the pitch and be excellent, some can only fulfill one role.
I'd like him to do as Scholes and drop out of the England team but he loves playing for England, Wish there were more like him.

I agree with all of that, and I do like him. But he's absolutely dreadful at the moment, and you cannot keep playing someone who is bringing almost nothing on the pitch.

It's a damn shame Janujaz isn't there to drop into the team!

He will need to ship out a lot of very average players, but I agree with Fergie. Liverpool have had terrible managers for ages, and it's been great for Utd!

Sometimes players look ste because they are being played out of position / in formations that they aren't happy with and then their confidence goes completely, Rodgers loved hammering square pegs into round holes,
We have Coutihnio and Firminio both Brazil National team players (Firminio got picked ahead of Coutinhio this year) Sturridge, Henderson, Milner, Lallana, Clyne, all England 1st team players, Benteke Belgian national side player, Cann German 1st team player, Moreno Spanish national team, Sakho France National side, Ibe Ings Gomez England u21, Im sorry but the backbone is there for a superb team once he adds a quality central defender and probably a goalie, If these players were as crap as some make out they would not be international regulars ??.. Play Messi Ronaldo out of position and they will look ste also, Rodgers was clueless in many ways but he has purchased fairly well this summer.

Delusional, I am afraid. Very few of those players would get near the starting line up in any of the top 4 teams in the Prem. Milner is solid, for example, but no more. Henderson is average. I've never seen anything in him to justify the hysteria at Anfield. He looks like a slightly worse version of Darren Fletcher.

Klopp inflation reaching new heights; he's probably a great coach and he's a likeable character but he has two problems; Liverpools own average squad and the competition; ManU, City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Fair enough... Maybe you should tell that to the International coaches then, and I could say the same about Rooney (well past it), Valencia (below average) Carrick (was great now slow) Schwein (slowing down very quickly) Blind (?) Young ?, Fallaini ?? Would any of them get in a city / chelsea team (not a chance)

My dog could get in the current Chelsea team, and name checking 3 United players who aren't starters as not being good enough for city/Chelsea is not a good way of making your point.

He has got a point though, the only Utd players that may get a start for City or Arsenal would be DDG, maybe Schneiderlin and maybe Martial. I honestly don't think Utd's squad is any better than Liverpools, just that ours has been under-performing for a season.

The only good player Liverpool have is that injury prone striker.

Delusional thinking Liverpool's squad is good as ours.

The Utd squad is very much better than the Liverpool squad. Still not great, but a lot better. Liverpool were heading for mid-table. Who knows what the new manager will do? He will certainly want to sell a lot of players and get in better quality.
