Had 4 passengers and myself in my newly acquired S60 D5.

Was shocked at how little the car struggled - it just shrugged off the extra weight and flew. My previous diesel, a 150bhp Astra was pretty good and a shade quicker/perkier all round driving solo, but it doesn't match the effortlessness of the Volvo.

I put this down to the D5s greater capacity at 2.4 vs 1.9 for the Astra despite the fact that they have similar peak torque outputs.

There must be a big slug of non turbo'd torque somewhere low down in the rev range before both cars turbos have their say.

Overall, very impressed and I think its where the slightly larger than average 2.4 litres make their presence felt.

Loving the car and settling in nicely with it.

Good, purposeful engines, no doubt about it.

Pondering over a V70 D5 for a workhorse, I'm wondering if I can buy it, use it for six months and sell within a minimal loss whilst using it as a shed/van! smile

Sounds like a plan!

Love cars, but hate the trailing round/disappointment/time consuming process of buying them!

Hope you manage to break even after 6 months - I've always lost on cars.

No doubt I will too but it's easier to sell the idea to my missus that way hehe

Had my first trip on the motorway in my D5 yesterday. Pulls particularly well at higher speeds and I'm really impressed with the lack of wind noise and rustle that you sometimes get on cars right near your ear-hole on the drivers door to b post seal.

Seems to have good sealing - it has the laminated side windows which might help cut down on noise a bit more.

The "resume" on the cruise control is a bit comedy compared to newer cruise controls I have tried. Goes "full belt" up to previous set speed - subtle it is not - especially when the engine seems to like romping at motorway speeds.

The M65 is quite undulating in places particularly near Darwen the car just stuck to its cruise speed up hills causing me to fly past other cars. Effortless.

Hmm, that would be interesting to try after a toll booth - resume and hang on!

Need to do some more experimenting. Under a controlled test, the Astra I had with cc would know that the car was in neutral (coasting at speed) such that if you tried to engage cc, it would lift the revs slightly and then drop straight out of cc - a bit like it was sensing the load or lack of load in this case on the engine.

The Vauxhall cc also wouldn't let you engage cc without at least one operation of the foot brake first - that took a bit of realising at first. Mustve been a safety feature.

No idea if the Volvo cc is the same - will try later today.
