Illegal speed limit signs

No... This isn't about an attempt to avoid a speeding fine by arguing the toss with the police, but a query about if some signs are real. I have sent a picture and details to the councils highways department, but knowing the speed they work at I will probably have forgotten by they time they do anything, so I thought I would ask here.
Some 20 limit signs have suddenly appeared on a country lane close to me. There is one house and a business down this road and very little else. It is not in a village or anything like that, the signs are on wooden poles and attached with screws through the red part of the sign rather than bands on the back like normal. These don't conform to the normal style of limit signs, and I thought 20 limit signs were only in built up areas.
Can anyone confirm my suspicion that these signs are wrong? I would guess that they were put up buy either the people living in the house or the business (I suspect they are owned by the same people anyway).

It is not a private road. About a mile down the road in one direction is a village of about 20 houses and a major road about a mile the other way. The 20 limit signs are about 50 meters from the house and business.I have checked street view and the signs were put up after it was last done by Google. Here is the picture I took at the time and approximately where the sign is from streetview. Not a road you want to be doing any sort of speed on anyway.
As you said OP, that looks like a scary place to want to do more than 20mph down anyway!

When there is a limit change, I always thought it was necessary to have a sign indicating the new speed either side of the road. Is this the case here OP?
...and also, surely, the 'other' speed limit on the back of the sign - NSL/30/40 etc? If that indicates the start of a 20, coming the other way must be the end of the 20.IMO no reason why that road should be a 20.

Also change in speed limit is quite a lengthy procedure (TRO) and requires public notices in local papers and on the road in question.

they will likely be fake, I once queried some new 30 limit signs that appeared either side of a house on a 60 limit road, the limit lasted about 50 yards. As expected the house owner had erected the signs illegally, council responded in 24 hours and they were removed.
easy way to check is the size of the signs, if they are repeater size with no large signs at the ends of the limit , or a sign that increases the limit at the end, then they were put up by the residents.
generally residents dont want to pay the full price for the correct number of signs so it can be a quick give away.

What about this 25mph sign - southern side of the Madejski Stadium near the Costco entrance.
I'd assumed all speed signs on public roads had to be a multiple of 10mph.

Good point. There are just the two of them. Small repeater signs and no start/finish signs. I'm reasonably sure they are fake. I don't think the council will tell me, just take them down, so good to have a bit more of an answer.generally residents dont want to pay the full price for the correct number of signs so it can be a quick give away.
