Ok, this is driving me insane. Does anyone know anyone who can permanently disable this system or make it so that the dash switch to disable it is permanently engaged?

There's probably an option in VCDS if you can find someone near you with it?

What don't you like about it?

I was really looking for definitive answers rather than probables; there isn't an option in VCDS. I don't like it as it's bloody irritating and the negligible fuel saving (so manufacturers can claim unrealistic mpg and gCO2/km) but I have to pay for excess wear on the starter motor and battery.

Well if you said what car it is...

There are various ways in VCDS, depending on the car, from removing the option in the long coding of various modules, to changing the activation thresholds to unrealistic values.

You can also buy some plug in modules that (I think) work by sending the CAN message to simulate pressing the button to switch it off.

From what quick googling I have done it appears that on the a4 vcds does not let you as the ECU needs a security code which vcds cannot access/input. Something to do with disabling it is technically tax fraud in Germany or something

There is apparently a polish version of vcds (called something else) that does let you do it, but how true this is I wouldn't know

I was told that it was NOT possible to turn the system of by. 2 stealers and Audi UK esp on my A4 Tecnik as it's part of the fuel economy system and low BIK tax rating .

It's not a good system in my Opinion the 2 litre lump is slow and lumpy on re- start and I have the added problem of a system that does not work properly that is beyond the wit of Audi to either see or cure

Coupled with the electronic parking brake system it is so dammed slow and hateful!

Same story with my Touareg, it's all a game to bring the ratings down. Thankfully the auto handbrake logic seems ok on mine, but I always end up turning start / stop off when in traffic, helpfully there's a physical button on the dash to do this. It's ok for normal driving & I can see the logic - just crawling along in slow moving traffic.. which is terrible.

The car I'm looking to disable it on is an A4 Avant 3.0 TDI Quattro S-Line. Superb car but this feature really does irritate me. I've done a great deal of Googling and not found a solution yet.

As far as I'm aware you cannot disable it. However, the stop/start system works on applied brake pressure, it needs to be medium pressure applied before it will cut engine. If you don't want it to kick in, hold the brake pedal lightly and it will continue to run. Either that or run your aircon compressor or get into a habit of switching it off. Personally I just control it with applied brake pressure. if I'm going to be stuck at the lights for 1min+ ill go firmer on the brake pedal, if its stop start, ill go light and keep it running.

I have a manual box so the SS has a different operating system and is triggered differently.

Bloodily parking brake is a hateful solution to a none existent problem , for those who have limp wrists.

I so miss being able to notch a handbrake on just to barely hold the car and drive off smoothly and fast , thank god I don't drive the Audi at the weekends and drive a proper car with a proper handbrake, no stop start ( one weekend car does have SS but it works imperceptibly and, properly totally unobtrusive )

I really hope the horrible servo applied brakes fail soon it's an Awful sound as the motors go into stall banging on the rear brakes every time, no modulation, there on or there off , but every one is using the dam things , more FREDS on more cars to mess up the car and land up giving stealers something to do and charge for , they make the basics of a car very reliable now so they need all these FREDS to make money again ! It's a car manufacturers conspiracy !

There's a button on the dash to disable the Auto Stop/Start but I'm looking to permanently disable it. It's interesting but I have no issue with the electronic handbrake; it works well for me.

In May I'm having the ECU remapped by MDM Technik in Marlow and have asked if they can look into disabling the Auto Stop/Start whilst they're at it. Here's hoping!

Discussions on Audi-sport.net seem to confirm that per AJB88 above, changing the voltage trigger point in VCDS has the effect of disabling it. Not truly disabling it, but fooling it into never cutting in.

From what I read on Audi-Sport.net this was possible in older Audis but not on the newer ones. Can you point me to a post where someone is reporting that they have successfully achieved this? Many thanks.

For anyone interested I've just received the following:

Gentlemen, I have done following changes trough VCDS yesterday and I can confirm Start/Stop is disabled every time I start the engine. "LED light stays ON" Thanks to audiinut.

- Go to Module 09-Cent. Elec.
- Enter Security Code (shown up by default) (mine was 20113)
- Go to Adaptation, Type Channel 34 and hit Read button, it should show the factory default number in value window.
- Subtract 4 from factory default number/value to disable Start&Stop every time engine is started. "Worked for my car"
- Add 32 to the factory default number/value it remember last status "This did not work on my car, but you can try"
- Test & Save
