Wife car hit, I think the details are false, what to do?

Hi all, short story, someone drove into the side of my wife's car on the way to work this morning, both parties stopped and exchanged details, both only had name and number.
Called the number given tonight, comes back saying not receiving calls at the moment.
Car shows as taxed.
Name does not seem to be flagging up on Facebook, possible on Twitter but old looking pic so wife is not sure it is him.
It's an uncommon name so I thought he would be easy (ish) to locate
Called 101 to ask advice and got a report number but no help at all!
Speaking to our insurance tomorrow but really don't want to end up out of pocket or losing no claims if possible.
Advice gratefully received.

Because I wanted to make sure I had as many details as possible before calling them and checking the car was safe enough for my wife to drive today as well as making sure she was OK.They will be called this morning.
I just thought there might be a bit of helpful guidance here to help me proceed but it seems to be the normal PH way these days.

He is being sarcastic, traffic accidents are meant to be reported within 24 hours but they are only interested if someone was injured.I reported a traffic incident I was involved in to the police 2 days after the event and was questioned about why I waited so long.

As long as you have the reg no, that's all you need. If they did give you false details, it won't help them if they later claim that the accident was your Wife's fault.They will be called this morning.

If it ever happens again, ask the third party to give you a missed call to your phone "So you have their number".
This means you definitely have the right telephone number as it's not uncommon to be given a duff number but it also lends some evidence to their being an incident between you and them if they ever deny being in an accident

I know a number of very honest people who drive cars, and are not on facebook, ttter, or any other unsocial media. If you phone my mobile during the day, it will be off (Client's Security Rules).You won't find me on any social media site, but then if I drove into you, I'd be expecting you to PROVE your name and address, before you left the scene, and I'd probably take a photo of you to ensure that when I make a claim for whiplash, it's your insurance that pays up.
