I need to remove the front upper nuts that lock the bolts that secure the plates to the diff. Can this be done with the diff in situ?

I can't see anyway to get a socket or a spanner on to either top nut.

I have removed the prop shaft/exhaust, but not the drive shafts or upper rear mount (I replaced that bush some time ago).

I know several people here have had to replace the plates regularly, so there must be a trick to remove them easily.

Yes. When I put mine back together I put nuts on the back of the bolts. I just used an open ended spanner. But takes a bit of groping round to locate them. May not have been a full size spanner.

Thanks Peter, but I'm not entirely convinced...

I've run out of time now, so going to put the prop-shaft back on. The only good thing is that I have devised a much easier way of dealing with the exhaust hangers, so it will be much easier to try again another time.

Things are getting very noisy now, so any tips on cracking the locking nuts on the diff plates would be very much appreciated.

hammer and cold chisel work well if you cant get a spanner or socket, i can't remember how much room there is to access them.

The lower ones are easy, the upper ones I couldn't even get a spanner on.

I tightened them (upper) recently with a stubby spanner.
I also stripped one (lower) before, they're quite soft.

The actual diff bolts are 95 ft/lbs - torque them 3ft/lbs tighter to relieve the pressure on the lock nut?
