Having done a few roads trips on mainland Europe (usual suspects, alps, pyrenees, black forest, d roads, gorges) we are considering Norway this year. Its harder to get to as there's no direct ferry. Has anyone done this trip and whats the feedback - is it more about the fjords and the scenery than the driving?

The Atlantic road looks like a must do and the Golden route offers up lots of great scenery but would love to hear from someone who's been there and done it.

Cheers

Atlantic Highway is a great drive.
And it's not too far from Trollstiggen. (Troll's ladder)

We flew to and stayed in Allesund, which is close to both and a lovely town.
I'd recommend googling both.

When I was over there I got some good advice from a couple of PHers, I'll see if I can find the thread.

Done Norway twice and planning another big trip later this year to the North Cape.

Two ways of doing it, either you drive up to Hirtshalls in Denmark and take the ferry or you can drive all the way by going through Sweden. Comes down to mileage and route really. If you want to go far north then driving up through Sweden first is the more efficient, though less scenic route.

The scenery is amazing. The driving experience.... not so much. The road surfaces can be very poor at times and they are fairly narrow. Speed limits are slow and norwegians generally do not break the limit, even on a clear day with no traffic, you may find yourself stuck behind someone dawdling at 40mph. Still it's generally fairly quiet so a minor inconvenience. Still, there are lots of really nice roads but I never felt like driving like a loon as I was more concentrated on the amazing scenery. Oh and progress can we slow, a couple hundred miles in Norway feels like a very long way.

Atlantic road was awesome, well worth pulling over half way and getting out. Take some good shoes as there are lots of paths and walking spots you can investigate.

I took my drone with me last time, if you want an idea of what Norway is like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luf7rpBpjH8

Done 2 of them: Bergen to Trondheim and Tromso to Lofoten. Both times absolutely stunning, even in rental cars. Can only dream about how good it would be in your own car, but it's a bit far to drive from the UK...

Atlantic road was a major disappointment, Trollstigen is fun if you go when there's less traffic. The best roads weren't those two - I'll dig up the names and some photos later this evening.

Here's a vid of one of the trips

Thats great thanks - and top footage from your drone. I've been looking into those, what would you

Our boys road trip is generally about the driving experience so maybe our usual hunting grounds are more suitable but am thinking about Norway now for a family trip.

What was the problem with the Atlantic Road? It looks great on Google Earth & am planning a trip in the next couple of years.
