Had a call from a tenant yesterday to advise patio door pane cracked/shattered....

thought nothing much of it other than it could be a stress fracture and that these things happen.

I organise to get it replaced through insurers and it's made safe within the hour until the new pane can be sourced and fitted.

Glazier comes round and is adamant it wasn't a stress fracture but had been shot with a air gun pellet or similar.

Given the location of the house, it could only realistically have come from one of 2/3 houses behind.

I'm not massively concerned about the cost as it was only my excess of £100 but it is annoying nevertheless.

I'm guessing that whoever did it will have realised what happened and won't be doing it again in a hurry.

Would you bother reporting to the Police or just chalk it up to experience ?

police.

You don't know what other incidents have occurred in the area - any local cats/dogs been shot?
any cars locally with pellet hits?

I assume said tenant doesn't have a 10-16 year old kid who just happens to be into air rifles? Bit of a long shot....

More likely to be a stone thrown up whilst cutting the grass. I doubt someone can really differentiate between this and damage caused by an airgun.

Nope, he has a child, but she's not 1 yet and not walking so unlikely to be her wink

Did your tennant find a pellet? It's a piece of lead and it has to go somewhere, so if it was a pellet, you should be able to find it.

Not even a guy that fixes panes of glass for a living ? Similarly you'd expect him to have seen quite a few panes of glass shattered by stones from a lawnmower. That happened in our conservatory.

Even more reason to report it, What if it is an air rifle pellet and it had hit the little one?

Appreciate it probably wont go through 2 panes of glass on a door, but the door might be open 1 day and some idiot behind you (if it is the case) shooting random pellets about, I think I would be slightly concerned if I was the tenant.

Any pics of the damage? Patio doors often shatter when people have a go at forcing them open.

Happened to my mum a few years ago, Police visited and confirmed that it appeared to be an attempted burglary.

I should imagine there would a difference in how the door shatters, compared with the damage of a stone or a pellet, though.

Pic attached and it does look like there is a point where something has impacted the pane........

Maybe, although I've seen a few patio doors which have been damaged by a mower or strimmer kicking up a stone - and all of them looked very similar to the picture posted by the OP.
