So here is the story.

I was driving down a national speed limit Bypass that has extra wide lanes for people overtaking and designated slow lanes for vehicles such as HGV's. I was travelling down this road and I like to get to the speed limit. Was a sunny day and lovely conditions. A Mercedes driver (old man) was doing 10MPH under the limit. I was coming up behind him and he moved to the center of the lane to stop me overtaking. Middle of day so there was no other drivers coming from the opposite direction. He finally saw me an moved over to the left. I went to over take him and as I did so, he sped up to try to stay beside me. Moving to the right slightly to force me into the oncoming lane. There was a driver in front of him ( a good 6 second gap) who decided to slow down so i couldn't pull in front of him, and move on the right side of the lane so i could not pass him either. I was left with little options. The Merc driver didnt want to slow down and the other driver (fiat I think) was not going to speed up but rather, was prepared to do the opposite. Fortunately, my car was faster than both so I dropped a gear and managed to get round them.

Im just worried because they forced me to go into the other lane and come very close to an accident. Will i get reported for dangerous driving.

Just to make it clear, the road is Arrow Straight with WIDE lanes and is meant for overtaking.

Sorry for rant. Just want to clear my mind.
Need to know:

1. Did the Merc driver see you and block you to start with, or only once you’d been behind him for a while. Your story is ambiguous there.

2. The second driver 6 seconds ahead had slowed, on the right hand side of his lane, meaning that the 6 second gap (at 50mph = around 1/10th mile, this wasn’t enough for you to pull in to?

3. They didn’t force you to go anywhere. You chose to overtake. If you were driving dangerously, then maybe one of the other drivers reported you. How can we tell you what they were thinking?

4. Schools are back this week, aren’t they?

1. The merc driver saw me and blocked me. After a couple of seconds he decided to pull over.

2. The other driver started to slow as I was over taking the merc. Meaning by the time i had passed the merc the other driver had closed the gap.

3. I was under the impression that when being overtaken you are supposed to keep a constant speed and avoid maneuvering. I was overtaking and he started to drift into me and the other driver drifted to the right aswell.
Im not trying to say they are dangerous drivers. If anything I want to know what to do in this situation If it happens again.

4. Yes they are however where I live there is no school traffic. We were the only cars on the road at the time. Also mid day so roads were dead by me.

How exactly did you come close to an accident if there was nothing coming the other way?

Are you certain the Fiat slowed or did the gap simply close because the Merc accelerated?

When you say 'old man' do you mean someone in their eighties or thirties?

You can't drive.

Why didn't you just ditch the overtake as he decided to speed up?

What do you mean "wide lanes for overtaking". Were you trying to over take while both cars ( yours and his) were in the same lane?

need to know car model and engines as i am fascinated to know what car drops a gear at 60mph and speeds past the 2.

It frustrates the life out of me when a car overtakes someone in a NSL doing 40mph however does so doing 45mph. An overtake should be dealt with quickly and not as a drawn out process.

If you've decided to overtake, commit fully to the overtake and don't fanny about. Timed properly, unless the other driver is in a significantly quicker car than you, the car being overtaken shouldn't be able to catch up with you mid-overtake.

ETA: the driver who sped up is a dick.

I've ditched an overtake before because someone had decided to match my speed then drop back to their old speed post-experience.

I imagine at somepoint in the past someone like this has caused an accident and had absolutely no comeback either.
I had someone in a Golf do this, the only time I've ever sounded my horn and flashed my lights at someone. Abandoned the over take as was in an average speed zone and they went from 50 - 62 to block me, was also coming up to a tight blind corner. Wish I had taken their registration number and reported them to the police.

I can understand drivers being inconsiderate and selfish with their driving but to actively go out of your way to try to cause an accident, they need locking up.

Where did you get 60mph from?

A quick check of OP's garage suggests either a Celica GT or a Fiesta Finesse 1300.

My Hillman Imp could do 50 in 2nd ( before it exploded ). wink

My M3 will do over a ton (indicated) in third if I so wish - quite quickly too, I might add! wink
