It seems the RAF are trying out a new paint job for the Typhoons....

Word is the markings are same as Hurricane 1A of 249 Squadron flown by Flt Lt James Nicolson VC, the only VC awarded to a BoB pilot.

London Gazette said:
Air Ministry, 15 November 1940.

The KING has been graciously pleased to confer the Victoria Cross on the undermentioned officer in recognition of most conspicuous bravery : —

Flight Lieutenant James Brindley NICOLSON (39329) — No. 249 Squadron.

During an engagement with the enemy near Southampton on 16th August 1940, Flight Lieutenant Nicolson's aircraft was hit by four cannon shells, two of which wounded him whilst another set fire to the gravity tank. When about to abandon his aircraft owing to flames in the cockpit he sighted an enemy fighter. This he attacked and shot down, although as a result of staying in his burning aircraft he sustained serious burns to his hands, face, neck and legs. Flight Lieutenant Nicolson has always displayed great enthusiasm for air fighting and this incident shows that he possesses courage and determination of a high order. By continuing to engage the enemy after he had been wounded and his aircraft set on fire, he displayed exceptional gallantry and disregard for the safety of his own life.
Looks cracking, hope they keep it for the display season.

Love it.

Should be kept in that colour scheme for all time.

And sticking with the Hawker lineage. In period, GN-A was a Hurricane MkI.

Wonderful.. And following on from the D-Day stripes. A simple gesture, but it says so much...the baton is passed.
We are sadly moving into a time when The Few really are..the few.

Are the Luftwaffe doing any of these fetching WW2 colour schemes on their aircraft?

That looked great until I spotted the trucker's cab quality airbrush pic of Winston.

I think a Typhoon with WW2 Luftwaffe scheme wouldn't go down too well these days biggrin

Whenever i see a pic of a Typhoon from the front, for some reason i always think two things:

1)Those inlets look a bit small (although they work, so presumably aren't)

and

2) The bending loads on the pins the canards rotate around must be frightening

;-)

I know the swastika is frightfully bad form these days what with Mr Hitler and all that (he gets badder each year), but is it actually banned? I think it is in Germany... though the device itself goes back thousands of years IIRC.

Yes, 45 deg angled Nazi swastika is banned in Germany.

A Lufty Tiffie in WW2 Luftwaffe scheme probably would be acceptable in most places in reality, except in Germany of course.

Closest I can think off was when Erich Hartmann was CO of postwar JG-71 with the F-86 Sabre, and the noses around the intakes were decorated with the same black tulip patterns as he carried on the spinner/nose on some of his late mark Me109's on the eastern front in WW2.

If you turn the scenario around, it would mean that RAF roundels would be banned in England... which shows how silly it is.

Luftwaffe cross is fine, just the swastika that was usually on the tail wouldn't really be approved of (and would be banned in Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Hungary)

Except, there are plenty of historic aircraft on display in Germany that carry the Swastika. It can also be displayed in public on model aircraft.

I don't know - the Typhoon's been around over 20 years and the project dates back over 30.
