during long lay up I occasionally drove car up and down long drive and found car veering left and right (30-50 mph) - noticed that wishbones are free to slide around on mount pins and that any 'top hat' shape had long been flattened, exaggerating this lateral slop - I seem to recall that spacers are available to overcome this - please advise

When i had dampers out, they seemed to be working ok (darned hard to push or pull, yet free (old red koni with 20 k dry miles) - is this type adjustable by turning? - One K damper engineer suggested turning them clockwise to compensate for any loss of damping over the years - comments?

I cant really justify replacing dampers if they are ok (not many convincing reports that aftermarket upgrades improve back road ride) and imagine, as this developed with just sitting there that the bushes and threepenny bit tyres may be the cause?

Everything appears in good general order - pretty much as you would expect for 20k dry miles - even stickers and chassis paint still in good order smile -

Car was mint before storing for a few years - need to improve stiff calipers and stuck on clutch + address this wandering

There shouldn't be any lateral movement in the wishbones. That certainly needs to be fixed. Can't advise on the spacers I'm afraid. You may need to re bush.

My car used to wander when I bought it some 12 years ago....... I ended up changing the bushes, suspension and having a geo set-up.... now planted at your speeds x3

If you are changing the bushes, I would send the konis away and get them serviced/refreshed as the bushes can be a right pain in the ass to do

its the wishbone mounts that slide along mounting shafts, which for some reason have always been far too generous - good 1/4" gap either side of wishbone eye - as I mentioned, it seemed a common prob and top hat spacers were available with metallic faces I seem to recall - i think koni mounts ok - heard different opinions about these being serviceable - some folk say TVR ones cant be and only aftermarket ones can (made to a cost?!) - anyone know anyone who has had a j reg griff koni shock rebuild?

anyone know where the re-enforced top-hat spacers are available from to fit either side of wishbone to chassis eye?

...My dear Mr Venn.....longtime no see!!!!

This is David with the Candy Apple J Reg 4.3 that used to come to Meriden back in the 90s!! smile

Yes original 2 piece, no rear ARB and red konis - all 20 k dry miles

Yes, it appears to lack thrust washers between wish eyes and chassis mount bolt flanges, so there is fore and aft movement - the wishbone bushes finish flush with the wishbone eye / collar. there is 3 or 4 mm, (front and rear of eye) float on mounting bolts fore and aft

Car is off road for past few years (due to finances and health) and when driven at only 40mph car lazily meanders to left and right (doesnt feel like steering somehow) and first i thought dampers (they seem quite firm when i removed them) so i thought perhaps the lack of thrust washers allowing wheelbase to vary dynamically and randomly one side then the other may well be the culprit?

I trust you are well, are you still commercially operating? - have a website?

very envious of your 330bhp Taimar Turbo smile

could you pm me with any recommendations for reliable specialists out Kettering way to look after my car - I am still strapped for cash due to illness, so suggestions can include experienced enthusiasts willing to work for cash smile

You will see from my sudden splurge of recent PH posts that I am making an effort to sort a few issues to get the car back on the road....on a v tight budget and limited diy ability!

Having done near 20k with factory original set up, since i have limited budget, i may just have to ensure the std set up is in good order rather than updating at the mo - so some sort of thrust washers plus perhaps take dampers to my local Konis specialist I G Racing in Wellingborough?

I have had the car two decades now, still looks utterly stunning smile - Wish my looks had aged equally well..!

Are the Meriden meets still going strong?
