Chrono 24 trusted dealers.

As an aside: the first proper watch that I bought, in 1991 and in preference to an inferior Omega Seamaster, was a TAG Heuer 4000 automatic. It is still worth approximately what I paid for it now (obviously not allowing for inflation).

I will be the first to acknowledge that the company has suffered under LVHM's ownership, but you still cannot buy a reasonable TAG Heuer automatic for under £300, so theyre hardly worthless.

Thanks for the recommendation for Dom, I will take a look.

I just like the look and feel of the TAG's Ive tried before, and to be honest, with a price range up to about £800 I think I would be hard pressed to find the Breitling I really want. I was thinking of an Aquatimer or Professional for the money.

I was just thinking of a good midrange (in terms of price) watch that is better quality than the equivalent new watch for around £800, have I missed the mark here?

Edit: I feel a "what watch for £800" thread coming on, something I wanted to avoid because the range is vast. I really need to get a better understanding of quality marques as I want to become more educated in watches, as I simply follow the names I know currently. I do really like the look of some much cheaper watches, things by Casio even, but wanted something a bit more special that feels like a £1000 watch, but with the advantage of being a well looked after used example.

You should be able to get a pretty good used Aquaracer for under £800 smile

Which Breitling model are you really after?

Ebay is good for used watches and as per the negative Tag comments, Tags are now arguably one of the best value 2nd hand watches you can get.

Ebay is a nightmare for sellers (fees, scams, etc) but good for buyers, buy from a seller who has spent a long time getting excellent feedback, do your due dilligence checks and you should get a great deal.

Some really good advice here, thanks, I have decided to bide my time a little (not sure how much time exactly, as I don't have a watch), work out what I really want, and make sure it is something worth the money.

One watch I really love is the Breitling Navitimer, this one in particular: http://www.thewatchgallery.com/shop/breitling-navi...

I am a long way from that though, so was just looking to satisfy my new watch itch with something good quality, reasonably modern (as in up to about ten years old), and that has a strong name attached to it. TAG seemed to fit the bill, but I appreciate the different views, allows me to do some research and work out if I feel it's a good place to put what for me is quite a lot of money for a watch.

The Seiko is a good shout, Ive been looking at a few cheaper new watches, max of about £500, and there are some really nice ones around. They don't have that exclusive brand attached, but I suppose that isn't everything. In fact, my favourite ever watch, and one I wear all the time, is a cheapo Orient Mako, hardly an exclusive name, so perhaps I need to step back from the pose factor a little smile

I've bought two watches off watchuseek, both are brands that I'd never heard of before spending far too much of my time in the classifieds section of that site.

I'd recommend taking your time deciding what you want, but then not messing about when the right watch crops up at the right price.

Any opinions on Maurice Lacroix? Would buy new, and love the simplicity of this one: http://www.thewatchgallery.com/shop/maurice-lacroi...

I did some reading up on Maurice Lacroix, and the brand gets very mixed reviews, with some people believing they are starting to gain momentum as a serious brand, but others viewing them as simply a fashion accessory.

Taking a look at watchuseek as well, see if anything really catches my interest.

No knowledge of the brand but it's a nice looking watch, looks a lot like the Max Bill which is on my list of potential purchases.

Never understood the point of fixing an elegant style watch with chrono pushers and sub dials – so that, along with being a quartz, for that money, puts it well down any sort of desirability rankings.
Junghans don't do a thing for me either, but as far as the ML brand goes, it's more than capable of holding its own against the more commonly thought of and known brands at the same price point.

I couldn't find it for less than £680, where did you see it at £450? That price would put it right at the top of my list (although clearly it's not to everyones taste).

Wow, they must be parts sharing for them to be that similar!! I had to look twice to tell them apart.

I wonder if it's the same manufacturer behind both brands, and they approach different markets with different brands.

You may notice the completely different layout of the dials wink

The Junghans is the nicer watch, make no mistake.

$688 = £458, I have never paid import duty on a watch from Amazon.

Amazon Prime US - Why the link skips to UK I don't know.
Nice one, thanks, will look into shipping.

I decided to take the advice of getting a cheaper watch, and will buy something really special when I have the sort of money to do it justice.

I went with a Citizen, although there were a few Seiko's that ran it close, should have it in the next few days.

Was a bit short on the details since its not exactly something a watch aficionado would admire I imagine, but here we go... http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/Citizen-Eco+Drive-Gent...

It arrived today, and looks fantastic, but is really tricky to set up.

Not too major, but it does mean watching a couple YouTube vids since the instructions make no sense to me.

Nice size and weight, and has the feeling of quality about it, so for the money I'm really happy.
