My local Virgin Active has bought 3 of these newer style running machines.
The claim is that this machine will burn up to 30% more calories in a single workout, compared to a standard running machine. I guess this is mainly due to the fact that you have to run on the belt for it to move, rather than the belt moving for you.

I had a good go on it this morning and cracked on for about 40mins until i was fatigued. The calorie counter showed that i had burnt approximately 1030cals in that time.
On a standard running machine i would have burnt maybe 600-700 cals, so there is some truth to the claim.
Another bonus is that i walked away without my joints aching, which i would normally feel after road running or conventional running machine use.

Has anyone else used the Curve and felt that they had a better work out, than a conventional running machine?

<Skeptic mode on> So, you believed a machine when it said you'd burned 1000+ calories scratchchin <Skeptic mode off>

Taken with a pinch of salt, but still. I personally felt i had worked harder than on a conventional treadmill, with less aching.

Not sure about the calorie claims (as someone said, find it hard to believe they're accurate given everyone is different, plus the fact they could just tack 30% on the 'normal' number burnt), but as far as treadmills go I think they're great. Much more natural to run on, both in terms of position and speed control. A good alternative to the norm I think.

I've wanted a go on a Woodway since I found out about them. Their cost prohibits most gyms buying them.

A lotto win and I'd buy one of the ones with the bar that you can attach a belt to.

Are you getting the calories burned from the machine or from your own heart rate monitor? If it's from the machine then it's not very accurate and using a very basic algorithm.

The cals burned on treadmills usually way underestimates what I burn.

I think i need to buy myself a good HR monitor and maybe compare.
How accurate are HR monitors these days, when calculating cals burnt? Or should i be looking into another thread for that answer?

why not just go outside for a run instead of using a machine? The calories your burn have nothing to do with the machine, but every thing to do with how long you run for and how much effort you put in

Running outside and running on a treadmill each have their place. I like and use both.

I like to use treadmills when it's raining/dark/other or when I have a set plan, like 8x500 at a certain pace, followed by a certain pace recovery etc. Just so easy to sort.

The curve is something special though, it is good or power/sprinting with the attachments I have mentioned above.
