Had one a few years back. Corrosion is main enemy, floorpan, sills, door bottoms, front crows feet etc. if you have a look at some restoration project photos this will show you main areas. Bodged filler cover up jobs are a worry !

240 came with slimline numbers and non leather trim although this may have been retro fitted. Engines are great with an updated cylinder head . Crank seals and sumps can leak for fun. Watch gauges like a hawk on test and at idle.

Beware extensive interior trim work being required as the costs of woodwork and trimming can soon mount up.

Easy to fall for these cars and discount very costly issues then get a shock when costing up the work ! I would definitely want to see the car on a ramp for a good prod around to check for rot etc.

Auto box - check fluid not burned and changes good . Manual check no crunching on synchros and operation of clutch without slipping and operation of overdrive if fitted.

Check any mods to electrical system eg electronic ignition , charging system and general condition of wiring - fuse box housed being hinge down centre dash switch panel and worth a peek.

Notice you were looking on Saturday so this is a bit late . Really interested to see how you went on though !

it was decent enough but the welding done to the floor pans was a bit agricultural and rather than cutting in and welding the panel in a piece of metal was welded over the top which looks awful and will probably last just a few years so I offered him less than his asking price as I could see quite a bit of work to rectify the poor work that had been done.
Having said that it wouldn't have taken much to get it through its MOT and could then be used this summer.
But I really want the 3.4 or 3.8 so I will sell my boat and possibly my XKR and look for a better car.
Lovely things though.

Seems a good decision to hold off. Nothing worse than unpicking a shoddy repair and watching the work grow arms and legs to put right !

The 3.4 or 340 are regarded as a very sweet engine and great performance particularly in manual form.

Best of luck in your search and please keep us updated when you locate a suitable vehicle !
