Hi all,

Had a twit go into the back of my (stbox) day car. Their insurer (Direct Line) immediately accepted liability (they contacted me the very next morning before I'd even contacted my own insurer to pass on the third party details)

Direct Line say there's no necessity to inform my insurer - trying to keep the claim costs down I guess... but surely I have an obligation to inform my insurer of any accidents / incidents even if they're no fault?

All advice gratefully accepted.

Cheers!

Depends on the insurer. Mine (nautical mob) state that all incidents need to be notified within 48 hours, even if no claim.

If only the insurance company of the party that hit me last year were that efficient!

Beware of letting them handle the claim - if your car is written off I don't think you can go to the ombudsman if you don't agree with their valuation. Likewise if you go through an accident management company.

When I was rear ended last year I went through an accident management company, but in hindsight I would let my insurers handle it.

Hope you can get it sorted out with minimum hassle & loss.

If you don't tell your insurers they if they want can find out easily by checking the CUE database, they usually do this when you renew the policy or when you need to make a claim, Direct line will need to record on the CUE database that their insured was involved in a fault accident and they will put your details on their too.

Cheers!

I'm going through the same thing at the moment. I was side swiped by a lady who immediately admitted fault and her insurance company did the same next day. I told my insurance company (Aviva). Her insurance (e-sure) texted me and told me I could deal directly with them. I declined as I pay my insurance company to deal with stuff like this, and they have. Car gets repaired on Tuesday.

TL:DR, use your own insurers, what you pay them for.

When you're renewing or shopping around you'll be asked if you have "any accidents claims or convictions" in the past X years. I always said yes, a no blame claim and can't say I noticed much in the way of a cost increase.
