My LCD Samsung (about 8 years old) has started to develop screen burn (is that what it's called?) after relatively short periods of static images being displayed.

For example, I was on the Sky settings screen for a few minutes to delete a few programs from the planner, and I now have a yellow bar visible with today's date. It's even worse if the Half Pints have been watching one of their channels for a half an hour; Boomerang! is now stuck in the corner.

I've not had a problem with this before, so why now? Is it just because the TV is getting older?

It's the TV telling you time for a bigger, errr, newer TV. It's tired.

I was hoping that somebody would say that, but my bank account says otherwise.

AFAIK permanent screen burn shouldn't be an issue with LCD. Apparently google seems to suggest either leaving the TV off for a few days or playing a white image for an extended period can help with temporary image retention.

Yes, it isn't burn like CRTs used to get. Some monitors have an exercise mode which basically switches between red, green, blue, white and black. It should go away eventually.
