Car failed for the first time in five years, always taken to the same place, on emissions (and a ball joint rubber split). Not sure if it was hot enough as they usually mark the form "cooling fans cut in" but this time says "coolant pipes hot"

Here is the report;

and here are a couple of screen dumps after getting it well warmed up;

Any suggestions welcome.....

Hi, could it be the lambda's sensors. I had a similar problem on a car few years ago although that car showed a warning light on the management system as well.

I don't know what's involved in the MOT process, but I'd suggest starting with a service. Change the plugs (make sure the new plugs have the correct gap), change the oil, clean the air and fuel filters. Change the lambda sensors, and then use the diagnostic software to reset the adaptive maps. Also check for vacuum leaks, and check your exhaust for leaks, cracked manifolds, loose bolts, etc.

On your screenshots, the intake air temps look high - you might want to check your intake air temp sensor, too...

My local MoT station says that as the Noble isn't listed in his MoT handbook, which lists the required values for most cars, that he only has to do the visual smoke test which normally only applies to much older cars.

Having said that, when I had an emissions problem, it was solved by replacing one of the Lambda sensors, so if your MoT guy doesn't agree with the above, its worth checking the Lambda out.

Hi Jim
Temp had risen as car had been sitting for 15 mins whilst I found the first set of pictures i had taken by the roadside were spoilt by reflections, on the earlier shots immediately after stopping temps were average 42.

again my mot station told me that the noble isn't listed in the book so emissions can be done on a visual check he also checked with vosa and they confirmed this to him

ive taken my Nob to the same MOT station for the last 3 years and no prob with emmisions they just visualy checked it until last week when they employed a temp MOT tester , i came back after work to pick up and it had passed everything but failed on emisions .... when i asked him about the testing of it he completly baffled me with science and told me every body else was doing it wrong!!
So what is the ruling ?...does anybody really know?..Can i wait a couple of weeks and take it somewhere else? or is it now logged somewhere and i gotta sort it out?..Bloody Jobs Worth!!...wont be going there again!

Year before last I couldn't get to Jetstream so went local where I always have my bike done. Tester told me that if the car is not listed there is a default reading (which Nobles can't get down to!).

Went back to Jetstream last year - problem solved.

PS Is everyone aware that technically the tester cannot check anything under the clams as they are not allowed to remove any panels that require a tool to remove?

You could take it back for a partial retest within 10 days and there shouldn't be a fee . Fill it up with Vpower take it for a good long drive and try and get the revs up wink and get a slot to go straight to the garage after the run .

Re-tested today and.....................it passed. In rummaging around I noticed the notorious vacuum take off feeding the MAP and boost control had been pushed right on and even tie wrapped in place by the folks that had the engine out for my clutch replacement around Xmas, no blame on them they did a thorough job. Surprised it had been running so well really although looking back it would stall a bit more easily than usual.

Thanks also to SWLC for next day delivery on parts for ball joint and mounting block, decided to buy the latter to avoid any delays trying to take the old one out and they checked threads matched properly before despatch so a hassle free install.
