Hot start problem
Discussion
Hi All
The car has a hot start problem. Turn the key when the car has got hot and nothing except a quiet click from the solenoid. Let the car cool down for 10 minutes and all good again.
I think a few on here have fitted a relay?
Can anyone supply me with some step by step instructions, electrics are not my strong point.
Cheers
Liam

Hi Liam,
Presume it's your Chim?
Try cleaning the starter motor terminals and ensure the terminals ends are nice and free of corrosion and good and tight.
Also check that your ( possibly braided? ) earth straps and battery terminals are corrosion free and making good contact.
I believe Longers is an expert on battery installation now
After that, try again, if no better, it could be the starter or solenoid on the blink or a starter cable getting too hot and causing high resistance. Where do your heavy duty cables run?
A relay could be a solution if the latter is the problem.
Or get a nice S
Good luck mate

He's got one.... Mine!in his text message Mr Plow said:
Enjoyed driving it home. Forgot how nice it sounds and how the power is there if you want it :-)
Does that mean he's nicked back that lovely S and left you with a squeaky braked thing from the Dark Side? And after you went to all that trouble fitting a new battery???? ......... Er..... .........
Hang on a minute!
You did remember to Vaseline the terminals and battery posts thoroughly, didn't you?

Yeah, know what you mean...........phillpot years ago said:
Trick is to fit a relay with a good supply from the big main feed to the starter then other side of relay back to solenoid operating connection. Use the existing solenoiod wiring to operate the relay coil.
Existing cable that currently (get it) goes to spade terminal on solenoid now goes to 86
Make new cable (thin) from 85 to good earth
Make new cable (thick) from big (live) terminal on starter solenoid to 30
Make new cable (thick) from 87 to spade terminal on starter solenoid
Job done

I hope that fitting a relay in the starting system works but the real cause i believe is that the starter and solenoid windings are getting hot ,Not due to currant flow but just the fact it's bolted to the engine block this causes a tired starter to fail , let it cool and it's fine as the windings have cooled down I get a lot of this in my world ,fitting relays checking connections etc is all sound advise but I believe the underlying fault is a tired starter motor . Richard
Errr just a suggestion but have you checked first that if you bypass all the wiring buy connecting the solenoid straight to the battery (when hot) it then starts?
Thus confirming the dodgy wiring, otherwise could be a dodgy solenoid.
A Gunsons remote start is a handy tool if you can still get one!
Cheers Greg

Hi Longers
Agree with Richard and Mike, so good plan......or you could just rely on your mates to give you a push!
Wouldn't be the first time though, would it....remember it's down to you to put petrol in.
Where were you on Wednesday when I broke down - should have been driving an S. I might have had more luck than I had with the AA who took 5 hours to get me the last 20 miles home after the thousand or so I had done earlier. I told them it had run out of petrol so it must be the fuel supply but even with the onboard computer it was not fixable.
That particular function is no longer an issue though.... Also it never will be ;-)
Assuming your daily is still a VW just let me know if it won't start....

Cold start problem, flat battery. Starter motor failed with jump leads. Took both starter motor and alternator out this morning for a refurb. Battery is 7 years old, might as well buy a new one..
Hope to get it fixed before SCH, should be ok.
On the todo list for next week, LH side engine mount with stainless support, Phillpot style ;-)

This.....your best bet is to remove the starter and service it/clean it. Open up the solenoid and service/clean that....and then refit and fit a heat shield above it to deflect all that unwanted heat from the manifold away from the starter.....job done!Gassing Station | S Series | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
