Picking / Packing Warehouse Consultants?

I've just started picking by barcode and looking to update the way that we store and handle our stock.
I think I know what we want however in the past when we have made changes we always wished after the event we did X or Y that we didn't think of at the time.
I know a few people here work with distribution - any tips or anyone I can speak to for 1 day on site help?
We are a small operation with around 5000 sku's. All products are very small and currently we pick from drawers. We fill these drawers up once a week or so from stock on shelves however thinking about getting rid of the drawers so all of the stock is in one bin. However thinking it might take longer as more walking would be involved.
An average order will have 20 or so lines on it.
Any advice?
