..please!

When I apply steering input I get a sort of whiney, squeaky, bubbly noise from behind the dash - I'm tempted to say from the passenger side but not easy to tell. It's a new phenomenon but fairly consistent over the last month or so, more notable when cold or starting up have sat overnight.

It's quite subtle. Not as full on as fan belt squeal but similar in sound.

Mine is an '07 plate so not the older hydraulic steering. What could this be? Power steering pump??

Thanks for any help in advance! smile

Post up a video...easier to see what's what with that. I think there must be a virus...mine sounds like the water pump and/or tensioners are shot frown Electric pumps are daft money.

This is what I seem to have..

95% certain your noise is the well known HVA (Hydraulic Valve Adjuster) issue. Plenty about that on the internets, I ended up having a redesigned cylinder head fitted under warranty to cure that.

The noise I'm experiencing is much more subtle and only noticeable from in cabin with windows done up when applying lock, so quite subtle.

Not sure you'd even pick it up on a video tbh

Have you checked power steering fluid level? I'd start with that at least.

I had assumed that the face-lift models using EPS had done away with fluid. Am I mistaken in this regard?

Errr.

No actually, I read your post as it does have the old hydraulic system.

Can you lift the car up and get under it while someone else moves the steering wheel slightly? Should help locate the problem.

Hmm don't have a lift, any suggestions how one would go about that on their drive with only a pregnant Mrs for help? hehe

It's a weird one. It seems to get fed up on full lock, hoping it's belts. It never does it just starting it without moving. I'll keep an eye on fluids and get the belts swapped, it's in the hands of the car gods after that!

I'll take the bet smile

Without using full lock no noise in the last few days. I think I'm going to scratch the V8 M3 itch fairly soon now so I need to get to the bottom of it, not going to pass someone a duffer. It's belts or bearings, maybe clutch, not tappets IMO. Still enjoying it tbh.
