It's based less on that and more on the value of what you might hit!
I know, but the less they have to fork out the better, you insure a £2k car as a first one they'll have to give you £1000 (Example) Insure a £1000 banger you'll get £250, saving on their end.

Their saving won't be passed onto you.
You know that rail crash I alluded to in my previous post? The published payout around the time was over £22m, and it still wasn't fully settled. No, insurers really don't care much between a £1000 car and a £2000 car.
They don't that much no, which is why if you bought £1000 car over a £2000, you'd save £200.

There are a lot of contributing factors in insurance, location being a larger one.
Try to insure a Focus in a quiet area with no crime it'll cost peanuts, try to insure the same car in a city centre/rough part of town it'll cost a small mortgage.

I was surprised with the quotes I got for a new driver, with 7,000 a year and the car being parked at school during the day.

2003 Focus 1.6 (100bhp) - £1500
2013 Focus 1.0T (125bhp) - £1550

So insurance is the nearly the same! Now it all depends how much money I get in the first place.

Ignore everyone else. If you are prepared to spend the money buy whichever you want the most. Why wait another year when you can buy what you want now.
Btw passing your test is not guaranteed, so keep that in mind. Best of luck on the day though.

I don't work in insurance, I was offering my advice to the OP; as I was in his position a couple of years ago. I somehow doubt insurance for new drivers has gone up £1000 in that time.

Have a look at Civic Sports, model name EP2 to help your search.

If you're wanting something a little nicer than the equivalent Fiestas, Polos and Corsas your friends will be driving then this is it.

Mine cost £1,400 (from memory) to insure as a new driver. It was reliable, cheap to insure and run. smile

Also if you want any tips for getting your insurance price down feel free to private message me. My renewal in May for a Civic Type R at 20 is just £900 with modifications declared along with a non-fault accident. If I didn't have the accident the insurance would be just £700!

Nonsense.

I just got some quotes for a hypothetical 17-year-old, in Leeds, driving a 2005 1.3 Fiesta worth £2,000

Quotes:

Ingenie £1810 (black box) £300 vol excess, £450 compulsory
Insure the box £2100 (black box) £1000 vol excess, £300 compulsory
Hastings Direct £2175 (black box) £95 compulsory excess
...
Diamond £7,679.70 (cheapest non-black-box) £500 vol excess, £250 compulsory

Change it to £1,000 car value (no other changes) and:

Ingenie £1901.78 £300 vol excess, £450 compulsory
Insure the box didn't quote
Hastings Direct £2341.26 £95 compulsory excess
Diamond £8,029.50 £500 vol excess, £250 compulsory

Now bear in mind you could knock those quotes down more, but it's very clear that the lower-valued car (otherwise completely identical) is the more expensive to insure.

How about a Citroen C2? Youthful, funky and comparitively cheap on insurance.

Don't forget, a VAG car comes with VAG bills. Just because the car was a few k doesn't mean it'll be cheap to fix if the car goes wrong.
Get a stter for 400 quid and kick it's head in.

It'll be the same anywhere, I've done it before for Surrey, same result.

My 18 year old cousin has just had a quote of £2600 £680 Excess with no black box with him as the main policy holder but his Mum & Dad as named driver on one of these.
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...

The car he's looking at has 82k FSH 03 it's up for £3500 but I'm sure I'll get that down, I have to say I was surprised but my broker explained that due to it being an Auto diesel, his parents being listed, low numbers crashed it is perceived as a lower risk than the 1.4 Clio I told him to look at £1900 £500 Excess.

if you want something "nice" it may very well be cheaper to lease a brand new car (or buy on pcp) and enjoy the 'cheaper' insurance a new car offers then offload it in a few years time for something you want.

everyone wants a nice car as their first but the reality is having no money in your pocket for when it goes wrong. i had a van for my first year on the road then got myself a car with leather seats!! i felt like god and had saved the cars value in insurance.

my younger brother is soon to be on the road and a panda has been the cheapest purcahse price+insurance we've been able to find for him.

In what way is a Honda Civic in any way measurably nicer than a Ford, Volkswagen or Vauxhall rival?
The cars you mention are all in the class below the Civic. To be representative it would be a Focus, Golf or Astra. And I can't see how a Civic is preferable to any of those.

I don't think you understood what I was trying to say. Most of the OPs friends will be driving around in the cars I've listed, the Civic in comparison is a much nicer car!

I should know as I was in the same boat three years back when I passed my test.

yes, but who is the main driver? I would be willing to bet son is only a named driver
