Today my father and I were driving with my MX-5 NC and my dad decided to drive. He has been driving in a car with an automatic transmission for the past years, so driving a manual again was a bit hard... On a little hill he stepped on the gas pretty hard and let the clutch slip a lot. After that there was a bad smell in the car. The smell was gone pretty fast, but I had the feeling that it was caused by the bad clutch usage. Is that possible or should I worry something is broken now?

Yes, like your tyres your clutch will make a distinctive smell and can smoke if slipped enough.

If it's not slipping it will be OK (for a bit), but don't let him drive it again..... Cruel Man

So should I worry now..?

The clutch felt the same as before after the "event". I am just worried something is wrong now. frown

It's shortened the life of your clutch a little.

I wouldn't stress.

How do I now if the clutch slips due to damage? Can I hear it?

Don't make a habit of it, but any damage would be minimal at best. It'll be fine.

Chill !

Slip is when the engine revs go up and road speed does not.

Will first occur in 5th gear.

This^

Try no to lose sleep over it OP - If the clutch is working just as well after the event then don't worry too much about it.

Mind you, that horrible smell of a burning clutch is enough to make anyone worry the worst. yuck

You'll tend to first see clutch slip at full throttle in a high gear, like motorway acceleration. What you'll notice is as the rev are climbing, the engine will suddenly start to race up a bit like you've just activated a turbo boost, but the car won't be going any faster.

You're probably not going to notice much difference, and any heat related glazing of the clutch will fade out over normal use.
I wouldn't worry about it, there was clutch slip, and there was an obvious cause so there's nothing to suggest there will be any slip when using the clutch properly.

You've never experienced it before? Like even when you learnt to drive or wonder why driving instructor's cars are going for regular clutch changes?

I'm surprised no one's said the cars a total write off and needs to be replaced ASAP, obviously for something with an auto

To be clear I am the owner of the car and my dad did this. No need to say I need a auto...

He has definitely reduced the life of your clutch, the smell was the smell of wear. It could have damaged the gearbox too. I'd get him to pay for a replacement clutch, gearbox and maybe even car. If he doesn't comply then take him to small claims for every penny he is worth.

IANAL.

As above, he burnt a bit of clutch, don't worry about it. I have slipped clutch to get going after I lost 1st and 2nd rage, the car stank like mad and I really really abused the poor thing cry, the next day it was slipping so badly I could not move at all, had to thumb a tow and get a new clutch plate.getmecoat

Just drive normally, replace clutch plate only when it starts slipping.

But some people are just tt looking to score cheap points.

Seriously it won't make lot of difference to the life of your clutch, such as you would notice, just teach your dad how to drive.tongue out
