For some time now I've been on the look out for an MG6 engine to transplant into a project MG ZT 1.8t I have had on the back burner for some months now.

I spotted on ebay someone breaking a Blue MG6 with the 1.8t engine about thirty odd miles away. I phoned up and enquired about the engine and they said they'd get back to me in a day or so when the engine is removed. My son Martin overheard the phone conversation and said he thinks that damaged MG6 on ebay was the one owned by a friend of his written off a while back. He would contact his friend and get back to me. I had driven that MG6 last summer but surely it's not the same car. It was as was later confirmed by my son's friend. By that time I had already agreed a price and the engine was out ready for collection. I bought the whole unit including both Manifolds and the Turbocharger with all anciliaries such as Power Steering and AirCon Pump and Compressor .. the lot.

This was what the engine looked like when I took this image of it last year when on a visit to our place :~

This was the car at the MG and Rover specialist repair and service centre before stripped for parts :~

Here's the the engine in my trusty workhorse Rover 620ti :~

In that picture you can see the front of the MG ZT the engine will go into after careful measurement of key mounting points to see if they are suitable. First glance checks show they look identical including the rear engine mount bracket still attached. Here is a close up of the engine. By the way, how well is that Rover's rear end planted with that extra weight when pressing on a bit on the twisties. Surprisingly good and far better than with empty boot .. Downforce is important... ask those F1 boys ... :~

Finally, the vendor stated that after sourcing some replacement relays which had been damaged when the car rolled, the engine started first time and ran sweetly with merely 21,000 miles showing. Which is what the previous owner already told my son when he contacted him to confirm it was his old car. He now has an MG6 Diesel in Grey. Once the engine was in the boot and all the other stuff loaded, I told the chap I knew the car and not only that, had driven it last summer. Had he known I had known how good that engine was he may have asked rather more for it ... thumbup

Another project I shall enjoy tackling now the nicer weather and longer daylight hours are here. The ZT lined up for the engine has only done 70,000 miles. I can then rebuild it's engine which overheated in previous ownership.

Well at my age helps to pass the time. Good eh... wink

Demands on my time means have not had a chance to start any work on this latest project. Meantime good news from the previous owner of this engine. He has been in touch with someone who works at PowerTrain ( Previously MG-Rover engine/gearbox factory ) who has confirmed the Chinese MG6 engine should be a straight fit providing :~

Powertrain said:
.
"All sensors be changed to mems sensors, clutch & flywheel change, egr blanked, inlet manifold change. Also these engines take 4.9 litres 5w40 fully synthetic, we use fuchs in factory. Don't go by k series oil as it's wrong type & capacity."
.
I had planned to fit all the ZT bits and bobs anyway as the project car has only done 70,000 miles. So, this confirms what I suspected would be the case so no need for me to do too many additional compatibility checks.

Ongoing and I hope to make a serious start sometime next week when there's more time available. Looking forward to getting stuck in.

Is there anywhere that describes the differences between the original K series and the new MG variant?

A friend works at MG Co Longbridge. I'll ask about that as it would be good to have those details. He has contacts in Powertrain and may be able to provide that information.

At first glance the "Chinese" 1.8t engine looks identical to the MG-Rover Unit. Closer inspection shows several external differences. I believe there's rather more internally and, more importantly I've been told the Chinese use a different casting process which results in better metal strength and density in the block and other engine parts. No actual proof of that only what I've been told or read on the web.

All the MG6s except the diesel use the 1.8t now known as :~

TCI-Tech/Kavachi (MG6 engine) - redevelopment of the K reverse engineered by SAIC prior to their enforced merger with Nanjing Automobile.

The turbocharger has a Mitsubishi Logo on the Factory Plate.

We shall see.

At last I have been able to do a little work on this engine. Lots of interest in it which is understandable.

I've updated my project thread over on .org which gives more info and ten images which some may find of interest:~

http://forums.mg-rover.org/showpost.php?p=7998706&...

My elder son is keen to get started and even offered to help me remove the engine from the ZT prior to his leaving to drive to Austria for the F1 GP. I declined his kind offer as I want to check the various interfaces before getting stuck in with the transplant. That just in case there is some last minute incompatibility glitch I do not want to discover when the transplant is near completion so engine may have to come out again.
