... and what do you do?

Whilst I'm happy in my present job (Compliance) here in London, my ultimate goal is to relocate to Manchester. After a few years of saving up I don't think I could bring myself to drop all my savings on a "just affordable" small two bed flat.

I had an interview in Spinningfields in January, and whilst I didn't get offered the job, the feedback was positive.

I've been in the Finance industry since 2007. I know Barclays and RBS have a presence in Manchester, and there are some smaller firms too, but would be good to hear from someone "on the ground".

Thanks!

I work near spinningfields albeit in a different industry. I can probably answer general questions about the area - though I suspect this isn't what you want.

Thanks!

Do you commute on the tram link? If so, how long does it take and is it rammed?

When I was last there in Jan I noticed the usual array of bars and restaurants in and on the outskirts of Spinningfields. Looks good!

The transport links are very good in/out of the city.

Depends on what you want to buy and where. South of the city is more expensive than going north.

Lots of property for sale within the centre. Should you decide to live here - no real need to leave, as great bars, food, venues and nightlife. Northern Quarter is fantastic.

I drive in as we have a car park (plus you can't expect me to mix with 'the public')

Some excellent bars/restaurants around that area and you're seeing some London places starting to make a guest appearence (hawksmoor, iberica).

It's one of Manchester most recent success stories and with businesses looking to set up in the north, it's all positve stuff.

T5R+ is pretty much bang on the money, depending on what you're into, Northern Quarter has a lot going on and is more 'cool' then Spinningfields. Spinningfields is where the z-listers hang out though.

Depending on the salary difference, you'll enjoy a far higher quality of life up here compared to earning a higher salary in London.

haha, nice!

I want one of those two bed, £250K flats, that's what! I'm also scared of buying at the top of the market down here.

I'd probably live South. Bro used to live in Didsbury. What's Northenden like? Wonder when estate agents will start calling it South Didsbury?

no.

for £250k (and working on the assumption you only need a 2 bed place) - Didsbury, Heaton Moor or go out towards cheshire and suck up the commute.

Both are nice, although I'd say Didsbury is the nicer of the pair.. Northenden borders onto Wythenshawe which can be a bit scummy.

Just to add that "North Didsbury" is better known as Moss Side biggrin. It's not as bad as it used to be but it's still one of those areas where even the Alsations walk round in pairs!

I see that Burnage is now advertised as having "M20 postcode" (factually correct though)

My wife worked in Spinningfields whilst I had an office on Oxford road.

Nice area. They have an outside grassed area with bars and a large TV in the summer. They show all sorts of stuff. You are right in the city centre too.

Some nice bars and restaurants right in the vicinity as well as apartments if you are thinking of city living.

If I was to work anywhere in Manchester city centre - i'd be hard pressed to choose a better area.

West Point has always been West Point. I couldn't stick more than 1 month living there 27 years ago....and that was as a student smile

Northenden isn't great. I got burgled a few times and rush hour traffic was a nightmare.

Spinningfields is nice and Manchester seems to be buzzing at the moment. I lived for 10 years in a large warehouse conversion in Castlefield and loved it.

Don't get tempted by cheap prices in Ancoats or New Islington as they're now calling parts of it. I'd forget about those flats along Oldham Road and Rochdale Road too. Grow a beard and go for the full NQ experience with somewhere like this. Still own my similar conversion by the same developer. Must seem like a bargain compared with London prices.

Understood! I won't look there any more. Thanks for the guidance everyone! As much as I'd like a flat in the city centre, I think I am past that stage now and would rather a small house. If or when it happens, I'll update!

If you do move up don't get swallowed in by the current south manchester obsession that's going on. West Didsbury and these places are ok but I don't really get the craze. There are plenty of other villages / towns that have decent places to eat / drink without getting suckered into paying through the nose for a pokey flat.

I wouldn't bother with Northenden. If you head a little further out Gatley and Cheadle are more reasonably priced than Didsbury and are well placed for everything.

If I were young again I'd definitely live in the city centre, it's absolutely buzzing - all the grad's who start at our place live in the centre rather than the traditional haunts of Didsbury and Cholrton now. However, I wouldn't buy in the city centre as there's never been any capital growth. My advice would be to move to Manchester, rent a flat in the centre for 6 months and get a feel for the area you want to live. I certainly wouldn't buy a place without having lived here for a while.

I also wouldn't bother getting focussed on Spinningfields, Manchester's not that big and there are plenty of banks not in Spinningfields - Lloyds are at Spring Gardens, Santander on Deansgate, Rothschilds on King Street, Co-Op at Angel Square, etc

Other half worked in finance in Spinningfields for a little while, now works across the road from it.

We're in Didsbury and she commutes into town on the tram. For a journey, it's great, being 30 mins door to door and the tram stop very near our house. It's only recently been put in and it makes a noticeable difference to us.

Cost of living doesn't seem that much more artificially inflated than the rest of South Manchester e.g. Chorlton, Cheadle or the city centre for that matter. We settled on Didsbury as neither of us had lived in Manchester before so had no idea where to look around. It's pleasant and doesn't really want for much so have just stayed here.

If I could do it again though, I'd look at a city centre flat for a couple of years. The ones in Spinningfields that I've seen are nice but don't seem that cheap for the space. Coming from London though, I'm sure it'll be a bargain.

A mate was in an apartment near Oxford Road Station that I was really impressed with. I think you get a little bit more for your money too.

Northern Quarter is the cooler place to live and is a bit hipster-ish. If you like quirky things and burgers, this is where to live.

I work in Spinningfields (Reg Reporting). Nice place and such a dramatic change over the years. South Manchester would be my choice. I did live in Cheadle Hulme which is lovely and more family orientated than Didsbury and Chorlton. Salford Quays is worth a look too. I commute in from North Wales now which is another story!

Cheadle Hume good but prices have been high for a while and the commute would be torture. The Quays is also good at the moment but too close to Ordsall for my liking.

For a single person I would definitely be looking at Ancoats/NQ/ Green Quarter. Better buzz and cheaper biggrin
