In a queue yesterday at a well known catalogue retailer Ar*** and someone in front was purchasing a Hitac** TV. The till operator that told them that said manufacture used cheap components and so the TV would ultimately fail, so she suggested they purchase warranty cover, like WTF, really, is she qualified to give that statement out?

My father in law also got caught from another retailer offering extended warranty/insurance rubbish for a TV he purchased because the kind salesman told him that his home insurance would not payout if there was accidental claim, but theirs would. I went back to the shop and got my father in law a refund.

I hear such terrible sales advice in shops especially those selling electrical items, what have you heard?

Currys/PC World have been signing everybody up for Cloud Storage subscriptions when they buy laptops. I don't know how many times I said no to some bullst I 'need' for the guy to spout some st and talk extremely fast using ste terms and bullst technical info.

The Cloud Storage thing came out of my bank a month later. I went back down asked for the manager and the guy who served me, manager was apologetic, the guy just stood there smirking.. Wtf!

A mate used to work for Dixons as a school holiday job, they got quite a nice commission on extended warranties, presumably the retailer makes more on them than the do the product so it's not that surprising they're all trying for a hard sell.

Picked up a cigar from Waitrose the other day and was proudly told by the helpful young man that my Montechristo was as close to a Cuban as I could get. Bless.

Not the worst experience granted. Cool Starry Bra

Actually a good paint protector is worth it, but not for the reasons the sales guy says. It does make the car very easy to keep clean.

I understand that

Just annoys me that they tell me this is the best car in the world, but I need to spend another 100 quid on top, surely that'd cost peanuts in the factory

I was in a furniture shop at the weekend, looking at a painted pine bed. The knots hadn't been treated, and had stained the paint.

I pointed this out to the sale assistant, and said I wasn't going to be buying that particular model of bed.

"Oh, but you can buy a warranty with it!" she exclaimed.

Would that be a warranty on which you will earn commission, I wondered? Now WTF would I buy something that has been faultily made, then buy a warranty which in all likelihood doesn't cover the fault?

Apologies if I offend, but don't Estate Agents seemingly know everything, about everything?
Or perhaps, just as a crazy notion, they THINK they know everything, about everything!

Did this on a TV purchase from PC world a few years ago...

"You need to buy a surge protector, any mains surges will damage the TV"
"really ?"
"Yes, not covered under guarantee, etc, mains surges are very common"
"So this new several hundred pound TV won't survive mains interference without one ?"
"Nope, shall I add it in ?"
"No, sorry don't want a TV that sounds a bit fragile"

And walked out.

Love it!

I used to work for PC World. I got in trouble for not selling anti virus to a couple buying a new computer.

The couple were in their 70's, only wanted the computer for word and to put photos on there. They didn't have the internet and had no plans to. Something which I asked them about and listened to them.

Apparently I should have sold it to them 'just in case'. Needless to say, I didn't stay there long.

I agree they make very good money on the warranties but she was right about Panasonic TVs being crap quality.

Had 2 over the years and both failed. All other TV's in about 40 years have been Sony and they have never been repaired and only replaced with new technology rather than when they failed.

Even if the quality concern is legitimate, it's about the delivery. There's a world of difference between saying "I've seen a few of these come back faulty, it might be worth thinking about the extended warranty we offer which covers x y and z on this particular product", and "Oh these are cheap st, you'd better shell out extra or be buying another one next year".

I had the same thing working at Curry's over Christmas when a student, didn't get renewed for a permanent job after, biggrin Most of the people just made up any crap to get the stuff sold, and then went crazy on the "extras" and extended warranty because that was where the bonus comes from.

My stock reply ?
You do know that under EEC law it's covered under guarantee for three years ?
I love the fish out of water mouth flapping that usually ensues.
(Yes I know my initial statement is not strictly true , but most have not a clue about SOGA)

Currys/PC World folks are quite funny when it comes to this sort of thing. I went with a friend to help him choose a cheap laptop that he wanted then and there. At the til this little scrote insisted that my chum pay £40 odd for them to set it up... I insisted that we'd get on just fine thanks. The young fellow then went on to explain that the laptop could not be set up without 6 Blueray discs to burn a recovery to. Having set up a few Windows 8 laptops for work just that week I naturally asked him for further details all the way up until the point he ended up confusing himself.

In the end we told him to get fked, took the laptop home and it was up and running within 20 minutes.

I used to work in warranty and add-on insurance as a broker, insurer and administrator.

Back in the day Dixons used to make all of their money from warranty and add ons, the hardware was sold at close to cost. Carphone Warehouse used to be more an insurance company than a phone retailer with £200m of premiums per annum. Tiny Computers was the same although they went bust. Front line staff get mystery shopped and fired if they are found not to have offered every customer a warranty or accidental damage insurance. I remember seeing figures for an American retailer where salesmen had twice managed to sell a $15 warranty on an $8 clock.

I knew two people in the business who drove McLaren SLRs and another who was a privateer in the BTCC for several seasons. Furniture warranties were huge as well. Monthly pay phone insurance was perhaps the most dubious. Thousands of people paying £4.99 a month for insurance on phones that they no longer own. Many of them take years to realize.

Given the st quality of paint on new cars £100 would be a worthwhile investment.

As someone who works for one of the mentioned retailers it is definitely the case that front line staff can be subject to a disciplinary if they are not offering every customer the additional warranty etc and they are checked through mystery shoppers some of which record with hidden cameras. In terms of the OP if I overheard one of my staff spurting that bks I wouldn't be too impressed.
