After a couple of years off the bike bar some occasional bursts of fixie commuting, tonight I return to where it all started, the local club 10. I'm a stone heavier than I used to be when racing and my only fitness has been a bit of running and sit/pressups to pass my RAF fitness test. I'm not even sure whether I'll be safe enough on the TT bike as I'm not very flexible at the moment and the position may be awkward, not to mention wobbly.

Still, I'm looking forward to the social scene at the sign on. Hoping to go under 30. That's my only goal. Perfect conditions though. seems still and a slight chill in the air despite sunshine.

Oof. Long time off the bike made holding my position hard. What seemed like nice conditions turned into a block headwind/tailwind course. Managed a 28:29 in full aero kit. Some 4 minutes off my course PB but leaving plenty of room for improvement across the season. Good to be back though, no matter how slow.

Haha! That's less than 30s off my pb after a full season. If that's straight in with little / no training then you'll beast it later smile

I looked at my local club TT calendar and some TT's they say 'try out' and notes say any newbies welcome, others don't say this. The course and dates I'd be interested in are not try out ones, I have emailed them asking if I could ride if I just turned up but no answer.

Do you need a liscense to do TT's, I have not done one since I was a child - but when I was a child I did have a liscense. I hope to go quicker than my last attempt when I was ~13 years old 29mins, from back then the adults in the club were doing ~25 mins mostly I take it 25 is still fast, as I'm talking over 20 years ago so a bit out of touch.

Cycling time trials provide insurance for club members but have a scheme called "come and try it" which they allow non club members along for and include the in thee insurance. This is usually limited to one course to limit the expenditure on insurance premiums and encourage club membership. Your club might be flexible though. Maybe pop down to the start one night and ask ion person. A 25 is at the quicker end for most club nights. The competition record is a short 17 I think. Our course record is a short 21 held by a UCI international team member. So it really depends on the club and course. Not many people will turn up and smash out a 25 without training. Unless your name is Michael Hutchinson

Ah, ok so it's a proper national organised thing the try it out, I see, I think I'll just turn up and ask if I can ride.

Edit to add - did get a reply went to my junk mail £5 to ride so will give it a go, oh and I checked last years results, no one went slower than 25:30 fastest was 22:20, think I may well be the new slowest.

Must be a fast club then. We range from 21 to 35 mins regularly.

It's appears so, I did my 1st 10TT practice since I was a child 20+ years ago tonight, thought I should have a go before Thursday, 28.17 on what I approximated to be the CC241 course I've entered, probably only a few meters difference in start and finish lines.

For reference the Garmin said 16.1km on upload and in some feeds still does I.e. The Facebook link from Strava, so don't know why this link now says 16km

Kind of pleased as on discussing with an old friend who I TT'd with as a child he thought I was mid 29 back then so better than when I was a kid, but disappointed as I really did try hard tonight and 2 hours later my lungs are still suffering, maybe hay fever, but tickly and coughing up crap, so as I really did try hard I do need to work harder to get close to the 25's the local club chaps seem to all manage.

Of course I suppose I may turn up and find they are all on aero bikes, skin suits and funky helmets, in which case I guess it's not so bad. :-)

Good call doing a course recce. Sounds like a bit of exercise induced asthma. Something I've self diagnosed myself after a particularly hard effort. Usually it goes by mid day the next day. Good sign that you were on the rivet,in my experience.

Let us know how you get on in the event.

Quite accurate on the starting to feel better mid day the next day, chest still not 100% but most of the wheeze / tightness has now gone. I'll see how I get on Thursday and feed back, confirmed today exactly where start and finish is and both are a bit further down the road from where I started the practise run so that makes sense as where I clicked over 16.1km was a good bit further down the road from where I started.

What course is your ten on?

Tend to agree, but even my old club which isn't a fast club anymore (since the best time trialists left) has many people doing inside of 25 on it. People in time trialing are generally getting better, as in the equipment and knowledge is such that many riders are getting into the short 20's where they might not have before.
