I don't recall seeing the road discussed here, however an email received yesterday from Avis tells me that the third best driving road IN THE WORLD is not so far away:

A535 from Holmes Chapel to Alderley Edge

Cheddar Gorge east to Ashwick on the B3515 is also on the list. Only ever cycled it

It used to be great when it was NSL all the way along, but now it's capped at 50 with a load of 30's, it's just another dull road.

Admittedly, the scenery is pretty good and the run from Saltersford corner, through Twemlow to Terra Nova with Jodders in the background is pretty impressive, but dropping the speed limit has taken the smile out for me.

Avis don't know their a**e from their elbow. rolleyes
The vids show that it's absolutely rammed with hazards.
I'm not surprised it has a 50 limit tbh.

That's more like it. Done it many times. The eastern end is super quick. It gets twistier after the junction with the B3134 and the Gorge itself is great. The bottom end is best done in the early morning or before sunset though, when it's not chock full of tourists wandering aimlessly all over the road.

The B3134 to Burrington is good too.

I am from the region, actually from the very town the "World's Best Road" starts, in the Douro Valley and... for me, that road, the N222, is a connection road for the fun parts... too much traffic and not that challenging... as for the landscapes... not the best one either, though it's cool to run parallel to the river Douro and the vineyards...

At the right time of day the magic number probably makes no difference ...... smile

It's a very good road when done fast enough - actually better than the C+F. Part of the Chelford-Holmes Chapel-Knutsford-Chelford superbike time trial circuit. smile.

Many years ago I used to start at homes chapel out to chelford and then alderley edge before looping back. Used to drive far to quickly. It's quite a dangerous stretch. It is a decent bit of road but rare to find it with no congestion.

I've found it perfect on a good spring/summer night while all others are cooking meat on their barbies. Not done it for a couple of years now though.

Just reminded myself going back probably 9-10years they were doing some road works between chelford and alderley. Road closed signs were up but you could get through the works there was just a ramped section with hardcore base. It was always quiet then. Good times.

Absolute rubbish. There is not anywhere in the UK that could be classed as a great driving road. Part of the reason is the fact that at some time on it, you would find either a copper, a scamera van or other traffic.

Pure fantasy. I could point anyone to a fifty roads in Europe that are far better than any one road in the UK.

+1. Couldn't agree more. I could find roads within 2 hours of Calais that would beat anything here.

Then you'd both possibly be wrong. wink

Unless of course you've both driven every road in the UK?

I beg to differ. I've not long returned from 5 days and 1000+ miles in the Highlands of Scotland.
Just one place where plod was lurking but there was plenty of advanced warning of their likely presence.

Besides, great driving does not necessarily mean going at warp factor 9.
Other than that, none of the issues you mention and the weather was fantastic.

Just as well I remembered to pack the sunscreen otherwise I would be done to a crisp. smile

Not just Scotland, plenty great drives in the North of England to.
To many 'great drives' are based only on scenery and how many hairpins or how many 1000 feet of climbing you have to accomplish.

Case in point, Bealach na Ba, a drive everyone recommends but frankly the alternative route north around Fearnmore is far more interesting and fun to drive IMO.

Trouble is in the UK you won't find any roads that have more than a couple of hairpins, or thousands of feet.

I agree with other comments, roads in the UK aren't world class, for all sorts of reasons.

I'd suggest that there is possibly a bazillion roads in France that beat anything the UK has to offer. frown

Quite, but it makes no sense to only do half. Do the lot (in whichever direction you fancy although, like Mr Carter, I prefer going clockwise) with lunch at the Inn.

Because the road via Camusterrach to Toscaig is a dead end many people don't bother and miss out imo. The upside is it's very peaceful and you can have it pretty much to yourself before the tourists turn up. Go to the very end, relax on the bench, and give your lunch time to digest before attacking the coast road to Shieldaig.

No language barrier or gun toting policemen marching you to the cashpoint either. wink

A535 could be classed as a nice road if your idea of nice is going to a garden centre and having a cup of tea.
Fields, sheep, cows, Jodrell bank, viaduct/aquaduct thingy.
Traffic cutting to the M6 from south Manchester, Farm traffic, pharm traffic (SWIDT).
Not a great driving road, but then I don't suppose Avis want you driving round at ten tenths in their shiny expensive cars.

In fact, isn't just about every single road in Wales bar the M4 better? smile
