Hello all. I wonder if anyone can help. I have a 1994 ex military Defender with the 2.5 non turbo diesel. Recently the fuel solenoid fell to bits so I ordered a new one and fitted it this morning.

The spring was missing so I had to stall it to stop the engine but otherwise it started just fine. Five minutes later it wouldn't start again. There doesn't seem to be anything impeding the fuel flow but I took the plunger out anyway to check and it still won't start.

I'm scratching my head but can't think of anything.

Any ideas?

Could be air has got trapped from removing the stop solenoid, some vehicals it makes no odds if you change it quickly, some it will need bleeding from the injectors to clear it but if you run it straight up and rev it it will clear the air but let it idle and it traps in the injector pipes it causes issues on next start?
I had an LDV400 with a LR 2.5 NA diesel and that was a fooking pig to clear air from, every single injector needed bleeding, IF the battery lasted long enough!

Thanks for the reply. I tinkered a little this morning and bled the fuel filter (which was fine) and the release screw on the pump itself which had lots of bubbles in it.

However, even that wasn't enough to get it to start so I suspect the injectors need some attention as you suggested. I didn't have time today but will look at it later in the week if I get a chance.

It turned out to be debris from the old solenoid in the fuel pump. New one required. frown
