Please could anyone help?

We have a 2005 FRV 2.2 diesel sport (110k miles) and there seems to be an intermittent fault with the clutch/drivetrain. Sometimes when accelerating in 6th gear to overtake on the motorway, the car doesn't have any immediate power and then the engine revs go into the red whilst the car speed does not increase.

The car protects itself via a rev governor and after taking the foot off the gas, the revs return to normal and the car behaves as expected. I don't believe that the car is jumping out of gear so the only other component between the engine and drive train is the clutch. We have had the car for 5 years (55k) and we have not replaced the clutch.

I have had a quote of £1,200 for a replacement clutch and dual mass flywheel (as the clutch is not warrantied without its replacement).

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Did it turn out to be the clutch or something else?

Many thanks
Mark.

100% the clutch I'm afraid. The Honda CDTi from 2005-2008 is well known for premature clutch failure... however yours has lasted well if its on 110K. Some have failed as low as 10-15K!

Honda 'fixed' the problem in 2008ish with an updated clutch (part number ends in 325 if I remember correctly)

If left too long, the slip can cause the Dual Mass Flywheel to wear, which is a big expense. If it hasn't been happening too long, then you may get away with just the clutch.

Price sounds about right at Honda... the DMF is very expensive.

Its the one big weakness of the Honda Diesel... other than that they are bullet proof.

I had the clutch replaced on my Accord ictdi (same engine as the FRV) at 165,000 miles. I Had it done at Westgate Honda for £650 - parts and labour. - and was told the DMF was fine. This was last year and the clutch replacement was part of the Honda Happiness scheme.

Ps The car is now on 174k, and apart fom the clutch and two £20 wishbone bushes, the car had been absolutely faultless,
